Given GB's eyesight and calligraphic skills perhaps it should have been dictated and then personally signed, as I suspect they will be from now. Someone, somewhere should have looked at this with just a little compassion for Jamie Janes' mother.

I just don't agree.
He wrote personally to the affected family. Personally, in his own hand, expressing his sympathy and compassion, a long lost art today replaced by typed secretary letters, which are signed without even being read.
If he was writing the letter and felt genuine heartfelt sentiments, then mistakes can be forgiven. Let alone to consider he only has one eye, and not perfect sight in the other, and a long standing reputation for spelling errors. Think how busy the PM is, yet he took time out to personally write to this mother (and many others).
To add to this lady's publicity stunt, she has now received a personal telephone call from GB, which she recorded for the Sun. This is appalling media attention seeking, her poor brave son, who put his life on the line for his country, I'm sure would be mortified if he knew how his mother was behaving. Grief is a terrible thing, but I suspect she is being heavily manipulated by the media.
GB has written personal letters to many of the parents of the brave soldiers who have lost their lives in this conflict, and none have behaved in such away, including the mother of the incredibly brave (and decorated) Michael Lockett, who I understand has berated the mother we are discussing yesterday for her behaviour.
I'm no fan on GB nor his government, but this personal attack shows the misguided nature of the public. And will have many people defending him.
