Advice Wanted (14)

I've just been offered a job interview in Kent (about 4 and a half hours drive if I don't take a break, 6 hours being more realistic).

I asked about expenses - the last time I went for an interview expenses were common practise. The company is only willing to pay half, and not overnight accomodation.

Am I being overly picky in not wanting to spend 12 hours travelling, sit through an interview likely to last at least a couple of hours, and having to pay for the privaledge.

Don't get me wrong, beggars can't be choosers and all that, but I do think it's asking quite a lot for "potential candidates". In the past, I've always found that's when companies treat you best, so I find myself wondering what they would expect from someone who works for them.

Open to all comments, suggestions etc.

Id take their attitude as an indication of how they would be to work for - all take and minimal give. I guess it just boils down to how much you need the job, whether it is worth it for the meantime or whether you can wait it out for a better option. x

I suppose I am lucky, in that my savings do allow me to be selective.

My Dad thinks I am being silly and that I should go for it "a job's a job" and all that.

Thank you for your advice.

I think that most companies are having to cut back massively on extra expenses, and it may be an indicator of that. Coupled with the fact that vast numbers of people are going for almost every job at the moment, they may well just have to keep costs down.

It is a good indicator to them of how much you want the job if you are willing to sacrifice so much of your own time and money to attend. It really does come down to how much you want the job.

Not an ideal way to treat you (how dare they :-)), but in this job market, probably quite common.

If you do decide to go for it - good luck!

Jules, Assuming the job itself is local to Runcorn (a no brainer) then why not treat the interview as an opportunity. Try to get a Friday interview and make a long weekend of it by staying with friends or a B&B in London and have a great time.

Well it depends on how many people they have for the interview. On the other hand your saying its a sign of how the company will treat you and how they run, maybe it would show the company that your willing to go to lengths and committed for the job and that your serious about it. If it was me doing the interview i would be asking myself if this person is asking for expenses to come to a job, is she going to be trouble when shes employed. Try and look at it from both sides.

Hi I would just go for the interview I understand your stance re expenses but companies will very probably just think well if your keen enough you would go anyway. Not ideal is it but the boot is def on the employers foot at the min oh if you do go Good Luck!!!!

Not sure if I would feel in the right frame of mind to go to an interview like that! I went for an interview recently which lasted 5 hours! 2 hours of it were psychometric testing 2 hours of reports and letter writing and 1 hour in actual interview - Phew. Did not get the job either so bum to that. Hope you are able to decide what to do, always so difficult when a job so needed. Hugs to you x

it's an employers market out there and turning down a potential interview where you could ace it would be criminal! But if you're not that confident in getting the job then maybe caution is wise.

However having been in the recruiting business you'd be lucky to get any travel expenses in the current climate. Even 10 years ago the big5 were cutting down on 'interview incentives'.

Tough being one of many - and it's not going to let up any time soon unfortunately...Good luck, hope you go for it!

Companies pay expenses to go for interviews!!! I never knew that, but then I've only really worked for localish companies who probably wouldn't give you 10p towards yer bus fare. I think I did get some expenses from the Job Centre many many years ago for going to Tewkesbury for an interview.

So I'd be amazed at getting any expenses.

Good luck. x
