Here is a list of a number of types of story...that is to say that whilst scanning for wank fodder on literotica, I got bored and started deconstructing the discourse structre of many stories. I generally find that if a story has the following pattern, it usually means that it isn't working for me as the reader:

THE ELABORATED BLOWJOB STORY

This is basically where the writer spends ages getting to the point and then it turns out that the point of the story if that sub gives Dom blow job...that's literally it (so she goes to his house, kneels, begs and then what follows is waaaay too much detail about the concluding blow job...ooh and I mean too much detail because the description is dragged out and not succinct, not because it's too graphic)

THE SHOPPING LIST STORY

"Master tied my hands up and then I felt them being attached to a rack and then the rack was pulled tight and then he went to get a flogger"

Nuff said. This type of story is often also characterised by descriptions of stuff that isn't that relevant. For instance, hearing about the flogger that was made by a friend who lives in some country who likes chocolate cake is irrelevant...I want to know about the characters in the story and how they feel/connect etc

THE "CONTAINS INFORMATION THAT STOPS ME READING MORE" STORY

"Master had moved from Seattle to be with me in Chicago and we have a friend in Arizona state and then we had to drive to a club in Atlanta"....so?!

"After we put the kids to bed we...".....shut up!! don't tell me this, it's not relevant and it's not sexy at all.

THE "WHERE DID YOU GET THESE CHARACTERS FROM?!" STORY

These types of story are usually characterised by a Master who asks all the old men in the (vanilla) pub to fuck his submissive and all the old men end up fucking her. Now some kind of organised gang bang, or a slave auction based context or lending out the submissive to one or more dominant friends are all believable but the idea that a load of random vanilla men would randomly be ok about getting involved in someone's bdsm games? probably not as convincing!

THE "SUBMISSIVE WHO NEVER LEAVES THE HOUSE" STORY

"It had been months since I went to Walmart and even then Master had lead me round on a leash"

Again, this sort of thing is either

a) not convincing

or

b) if even remotely convincing, too worrying in a way that puts me off a sexier train of thought...I mean, that's a really healthy Ds dynamic isn't it, keeping the sub indoors all the time so that they are ravaged with bdsm needs and bored fuckless vanilla style lol...Again, if a story doesn't sound convincing to the point of being too abstract, it puts me off.

I must say though that the idea of the sub being kept in all the time does seem to work in the context of a kidnap story or a fantasy story (but usually this involves a maassive house with a hareem in it so as the reader i'm more willing to suspend believe than if told about a submissive who stays indoors in an average house/flat for extended periods of time)

Disclaimer

I mean clearly, it would be massviely hypocritical of me to diss stories of others when I know that mine on here have ranged from hot to cold. But this blog is about highlighting the stuff that I don't wish to replicate in my own writing. I think doing anything creative successfully has a lot to do with looking at the work of others and saying why you do/don't like it so that you can observe features of their work that may become relevant to what you produce yourself.

So yeah, I hope this blog wasn't too geeky and I look forward to doing a blog in the future about what DOES make good erotic writing :)

What are your thoughts?

Laura :)xx

And here was me thinking you were objected to scat based porn ;)

I don't know what's right and what's real any more

I quite like that in a story: It helps if the people are believable for me and to be believable they have to have a life outside of sex that sets up their character, including jobs, children etc. If well written this can even be the bulk of the story, as long as the sex part is suitably nasty. ;-)

Submission is giving someone the ability to destroy You, but trusting them enough not to.

Ah yes I agree with this, I suppose I should have explained better that it's too much detail that puts me off rather than relevant detail...like the detail has to function as a driver behind character rather than a distraction :)

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice :)xx

Bad writing puts me off hugely.

One of the main problems with erotica is that it's poorly written, often by people who wouldn't know a flogger if someone hit them with it. The type that puts me off most is the type written from the Dom's perspective that goes miles too far "As I swung the cane with all my force for the three hundredth time..." Yuh-huh. Especially if you can tell that the author was writing one-handed, if yannow what I mean.

I don't mind erotica that's out of my comfort zone (one of my favourite Patrick Califia stories is way beyond anything I would do or want to do in real life) but it needs to be written by someone who knows what they're writing about, and isn't just typing out their own wank fantasies.

Characters need to be reasonably real. If there are bottoms bared within fifty words, it's the kink equivalent of hetero 'nilla porn films: boy meets girl, girl drops knickers, bang-bang-bang-bang-bang. Dull, implausible, and very difficult to imagine yourself in the position of one of the characters.
