so you split up with someone due to wanting different things in the long term, you do a couple of 'swaps' of things and end up having great sex and a play session on one of these swaps!!

so, my question to you all is should you be looking to the future and new opportunities or play while the goings good?

Er... why not do both?

Surely there's a point between nothing and long-term-relationship?

If both of you want it, why shouldn't you both enjoy the moment, recognising that it's not going to be long-term and you might even both be looking out for something (someone) else?

The rules are what you make them. As long as you both know what the deal is, and stick to it, it should be possible. The point at which trouble occurs is when one person goes behind the other's back.

It would be great if you can play with no strings 'whilst the going is good'. Unfortunately it seems that although most people say they can do it, 'just play', there is always someone who ends up with more feelings than another person. What can start out as just play or just a shag relationship (whilst you wait for something better to come along) usually works for one and not the other. Sometimes, it works but that is rare.

Unfortunately, when one is ready to move on from this 'easy' relationship they have issues. They can find that the person who has more feelings (even though they said they are cool with it) are in fact not. This can then progress into a war and peace letter, e-mail or phone call about what a selfish shit you are. Furthermore, whilst your spending time with the person who is not the one you are limiting time spent on finding 'the one' or a better match for yourself.

It really can work if everyone is reading from the same hymn sheet...sometimes, it doesn't matter how much you tell someone where they stand they desire and hope for more. It is this secret desire which can cause issues and upset people.
