...starring George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges is to be released on 6 November 2009 in the UK.
The film is about officially organised sadism, dominance, mind control and mood manipulation.
Based on Jon Ronson's classic book about psychological operations in the Gulf Wars. It was he who broke the news that shady covert government agencies were experimenting on Iraqi and other POWs with disorientating music (famously Barney the Dinosaur's 'I Love You'), environmental manipulation and other strange technologies to break them without leaving a mark.
Apparently, all was inspired by American Lt. Colonel Jim Channon, sent into the hippies and alternative therapists in the Seventies and Eighties with a brief to come back with anything useful. He overdid it and submitted a folder about a ' First Earth Battalion ' filled with flower children who could stop battles by thinking goodwill into their foes. He even talked a Major General into breaking his own nose by believing he could 'will' himself through a wall.
Many of the ideas were worked on by army psychologists and techies until places like Guantánamo Bay were born . Special forces were taught secret techniques inspired by the dossier and non-lethal riot control weapons were developed.
Allegedly, Lt. Colonel Jim Channon was horrified and resigned, although Ronson is unconvinced.
The book is a must-read for sadists and dominants everywhere and I hope the film will be equally as full of inspiration – though no doubt presented through Hollywood's usual filters of macho adventure and absurd comedy.
I think that this is going to raise a lot of debate amongst the general public about the practise of sadism as well as attitudes to personal freedom amongst the political classes.
Should be fun to watch anyway.
ETA: Just found the trailer - well, my predictions were correct about the medium of relaying the tale - does that make me "a Jedi" too?
