Now I've seen True Blood episode two I'm quite interested in the theme: oppressed minority struggles against the long held misconception and suspicion of mainstream society. However it's two for two on the BDSM is bad subtext. The second episode shows Sookie's brother - the sexual adventurer - tied to a bed and then left against his will while his lover goes off and does a shift at the bar. Again the message is: allow yourself to be tied up and bad things happen to you. Even if in the next episode this is explained away, as it was with the murder of woman in bondage in the first episode, the damage is done. The lasting impression is a negative one. I don't have any particular gripe against this series other than the depiction of BDSM. For a series in the 'cult TV' genre it seems okay - better than most in fact. If my criticism of its negative depiction of BDSM diminishes anyones enjoyment of it as entertainment I apologise. However, anything in the mainstream media that features kink should be examined carefully - by those pushing for kinks acceptance - to see what underlying messages are being given. True Blood has twice now delivered a 'kink is bad' message. Kink is mutally enjoyable sex. If it's shown as something else, it's bad for the cause.

Actually, I disagree. The first+second episode together show the risks of only looking at half the picture and the misunderstandings that come with it. It very effectively demonstrates just how BDSM can be misunderstood and innocent BDSM practicioners (or dabblers in this case) can end up in legal trouble unless the full details are known.

It's a valid subtext, but strung out over two episodes makes it a much weaker message than 'bad things happen when you're tied up.'

What about ignoring the 'bdsm subtext' and just watch the bloody programme. Too many people are hung up on oooh they are saying 'we' are bad people, when the majority of people probably aren't that interested, and curiously, watch the programme for the wider picture rather than fixating on one or two scenes. The CAUSE?! What do you think this is, the Black Panthers in 69? Jesus Christ. On another point, is you watching the second of a shitty TV programme REALLY worth another thread? You can watch them all online and share your opinions AFTER you've watched them. It might make your opinion less ill-informed. Edited 15 Oct 09, 3:15 PM by Protocol

Watched epi 2 - that's exceedingly silly, but kind of fun. What is it, though, about bondage on telly, that says it has to be done so amazingly badly? Jeebus.... Why poison your liver when I could eat it for you?

I think it was a judgment in an Obscene Publications Act long ago (IANAL so don't ask me for chapter and verse) that said any bondage images had to look escapable, you'll notice the Honour catalogue models never have both cuffs closed for instance. Many days one day |
