Hi all,
One of the hats I wear is to sit on a police equality group,as part f that I have access to the policy on sentencing of purpetrators of hate crimes.
One of the things which I found impressive is that the sentence is to be more severe for hate crimes,EXCEPT FOR TRANSPHOBIC HATE CRIMES.
I have checked with the crown prosecution service and that is hoe the law is written.
My question is do we as a group want to agitate to change this, or are we content to not have the added protection this might afford?
Hugs,
Irene.

Some questions. I'll keep 'em short and sweet. Who do we contact? How do we contact them? And what do we say to them and use for examples? and then... What are the standard sentences for the varios hate crimes? I know someone who after very nearly getting attacked, purely as a transphobic incident, took them to court and scored £50 compensation, and saw the offender take a furthr £60 in fees and 60 hours of community service. ~Lilith~

Well, I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with the idea that it would be a good thing if the rules included transphobic hate crimes as equal to other hate crimes. On the other hand, how would we go about lobbying to get them changed, and would it be worth the effort? How many hate crimes are there that manage to be transphobic without also being homo- or bi-phobic? If the answer is zero, then a change would have no practical effect.

At the moment I don't know how to approach this, but I am going to discuss it with the Group organizer of Transliving, and perhaps with a couple of policemen of my aquaintance. The most probable start is letters to MPs, but some kind of public campaign might be needed too. Will get back to you on this in a week or so. Hugs, Irene.

I am really lucky. Where i live the police hate Homophobic hate crime of any type. They do include Trans people in this. I have had to use there service a couple of times. One person within 1 hour of giving my statement the said person was issued with a harresment warning which is held on file for 6 months. Edited for PS. We are covered under the sexual discrimination act in employment and in every day life. Those are the powers the police try and use.

if you are assaulted surely the sentence should be the same. if you are black white M or F,TG. you are a human being that has been attacked. should women who attack you get more or lesser sentences than men?

We were followed back to our car in a dark car park in Birmingham Hurst Street (Gay Village) by two Asian guys, they were very intimidating but we just ignored them and got in the car.
They stood 15 meters away from the car, then one of them decided to approach the car and proceeded to lean on my drivers side and tap on the window, he said something through the glass to which I just ignored....my fiancee phoned the Police for assistance and was told to just get out of there as soon as possible to which I just drove off spinning the guy round that was leaning on our car, they both through rocks at our car, so I reversed to try and scare them but to no avail......! We drove around the block just in case the Police arrived so that we could give a description but NO ONE turned up....! My very dear friend (below) April Lear died because of transphobic abuse at the hands of fellow workers so we advocate this scum getting what they deserve in the courts, they should get exactly the same as any one else that commits a hate crime......! In loving memory of a dear friend..April lear 1953-2008. Fondly remembered and very sadly missed...finally found peace my sweet.

I spoke to the transliving co-ordinator this weekend, and we are investigating the exact reasoning behind this matter. We have consulted a legal eagle, and will be writing a form letter for sending to MPs in due course. My own experience with transphobic trouble and the police was not reassuring, which is why I became involved with this police diversity group. Hugs, Irene.

We all want to live our lives in peace and quiet. Then suddenly I recieve an email from collarme saying i have created a new profile and it is active. I have not created a profile and find the profile very upsetting.I was going to paste the link on here but i think it might be time for the police on this matter.
