reading an article in the Suday Telegrah this morning, about Eddie Izzard, and cam across the following: "not that he is gay. Most real transvestites, as opposed to recreational cross-dressers, aren't" I suppose it depends on interpretation of the terms, but I'd be interested in your comments. I cross-dress for "play" as a switch, and only then, apart from a very occasional time when I feel so inclined. So is that "recreation" and therefore by implication I'm gay. I was at a munch very recently, and was chatting to a newcomer. After a bit of vague chat about his knowledge of the "scene" he suddenly said "so you are into cross-dressing" Rather a statement of the bleedin' obvious as I was standing next to him and wearing a blouse, skirt and high heels."are you gay or straight?" He seemed quite surprised when I said I was entirely hetero and married. Which perhaps answers my own question?

Gender is a spectrum I feel, not a binary yes/no and is completely distinct from sexuality There is no such thing as a recreational crossdressor either, thats just bitchiness on their part So yes there are gay crossdressors, but they're not gay because they're a crossdressors it's incidental It would be like saying Eddies done a marathon, Eddies a tranny therefore all trannies are marathon runners The public perception though is that we're all gay

I can't remember where I read it,but I understand that statistically most cross dressers are hetrosexual men. Why a love of wearing women's clothes should have you labelled as gay I don't understand. After all many straight men and women enjoy anal sex and that hardly makes them gay does it?

My interpretations of the term "gay" is, being sexually attracted to the same sex. Cross dressing is neither gay no bi nor hetero, but people's confusion is understandable: after 30 years of gay rights movement and activism, most people's only exposure to cross-dressers in the open comes from the gay subculture, so it's not difficult to assume that one thing equals the other.
And personally, I wouldn't choose the Telegraph to enlighten me in terms of gender, sexuality and alternative sexual choices "People are inherently evil, but very, very funny" - Joe Orton. Edited 20 Sep 09, 9:37 AM by Ms_Tytania

For the avoidance of doubt this would make you gay

The article just says what most cross dressers 'are'.. it's not the same as implying everyone who crossdresses 'is' (it's clearly acknowledging everyone's not all the same). Whether 'most crossdressers' are gay or straight has no reflection on your personal sexuality. People of various sexualities cross dress. Your gender identity (as opposed to how you dress) does reflect on what sexuality label you have though, of course. My understanding is that CD's are 'generally' straight. And that statistically a large proportion of straight men (kinked or not) have experimented in cross dressing to some extent. I'm learning, slowly (it's hard to break *mumble* years worth of social conditioning) to not generalise. And that I am shockingly ignorant of gender politics. In my opinion which is that very thing...... mine, i would say eddie izzard and the telegraph are neither in a position to determine anyones sexuality other than the author of the article and eddie izzard about themselves. Generally generalisations about others are wrong. You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.

Have to make a distinction here, I'm afraid. Your sex is the thing between your legs. Gender is an artificial identity constructed for use in social situations and to be used in a sexuality. Sexuality is a description of the acts you do. While most people's gender matches their sex, I think we all know that that isn't always the case. Sorry to be a bit pedantic, but I feel the distinction is important. By opening up the definition of the word "gender", I think we'll open up the definition of the word "sexuality". The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. |
