This may well be an ecumenical matter.
On the last census form I stated my religion as Jeddi Knight, a bit of whimsy with a nugget of philosophy. Next time (if I decide they can be trusted with information and I don't have to spend that particular day beyond the 12 mile off-shore limit) I shall declare from the heart. Now here's the plan...
What size Flock do you need to gather to qualify as a religion and achieve charitable status? Not much (I trust the Knowledgeable out there to tell). And what kind of cause or history etc? That one must be up for grabs and the ground here should be solid enough.
The Flagellants were a craze of religious zealots who swept Europe in the 14th century for the place had fallen into darkness and the Lord (in his infinite mercy etc etc) had withdrawn his face. Be it black death or swine flu, economic doom, general peevishness among the populace or whatever, it's just the ticket if you want to start burning witches, wailing from rooftops or, indeed, whuppin' ass.
I reckon it would be a piece of piss to get the Liturgy together, enough of the Faithfull to fill our places of worship and Doctors of Divinity in various forms to lead the praise. There could be robed, chanting, torch-bearing processions of solemn Flagellants on saints' days (Spanner martyrs and so on). Our own web channel would follow. We could evangalise to the Septics - they love a bit of testifying - and before long we'd have our own satellite channel. And all for the glory of the Almighty! Amen! Hallelujah!
I am available for confessions...

Well you already have Foxe's Book of Martyrs for genuine religious inspiration... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxe`s_Book_of_Mart... (for some reason this link won't work but I copied it from the browser bar of the relevant Wikipedia page) Indeed a kinky friend of mine once claimed Foxe's was "one of the best one-handed reads he'd ever seen..." I should point out that you've got the wrong century. Flagellation was at its height in the 14th century, not the 15th. It had been around for a while but the Black Death of 1348/9 saw an upsurge. See... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagellant Strangely religious flagellation was suppressed in the 15th century by the Inquisition as a heresy. Clearly the Inquisition did not want self-flagellating people running around. That would take all the fun out of it for the members of the Inquisition! The second link above cross links at the bottom to Monty Python and the Holy Grail but the best Christian flagellant scene in a movie is undoubtedly in Jabberwocky. One of the flagellants even gets fired (burning) from a catapult and lands in a fireball with the words "Nice!" Flogher - I cane, I whip, I cuddle Edited 15 Sep 09, 11:23 AM by Flogher

Going to school does not make a person educated, any more than going to a garage makes a person a car
