Making the most of an injury (8)

Well, like I've got much choice. I endured the winter on that old wooden ketch on her swing mooring and in May - bang! - one buggered back. A few of the lumbar and sacral disks not doing what they're paid for - all that yoga and beer lovingly thrown at them and they respond with treachery!

So I'm now in the wilderness of the Welsh border propped up on a coctail of pills and a bit of hazel waiting for an operation. Happily said pills are working and I'm doing stacks of sit-ups and all the other exercises recommended by a sports physio friend of mine.

It's at times like this when one learns something of use. I've had to adapt my whip technique to suit my injury (I actually started with the aforementioned bit of hazel - a lovely coppice root knob stick but a bit light for pounding footpads and ne'erdowells as per the gentlemanly art of Bartitsu) getting a good education in what happens if you don't move quite right.

This all has a bearing on teaching, y'see. In the course of affairs I have become familiar with large breasts and their effect on one's stroke but now I can appreciate what countless poor sods are up against, and large breasts are the least of it. No worries, I have the Technology.

And while I'm forced by occasional necessity to carry a stick I'm on the hunt for something nice. A blackthorn root knob, perhaps, for country walking and punishing oiks while for the city maybe an elegant crook in dragon or some other cane which might also serve for the heavier end of entertainment.

I shall have to acquire a cunningly carved stick, such as were used by wise old types in days of yore, with which to perform rites and all manner of wrongs.
