Reminds me of ARP poisoning attacks, rare in general population, but not so rare for commercial hacking.

It's easy to do, even in Windows.

Still, it's a localised threat, something for network admins to worry about on occasion.

Then it can't be the "quite expensive software" that Mattbucks was referring to :-p

This is the context of the comment I was replying to:

Ah - the irony missed me and killed an innocent bystander in the crowd :-)

There is a limited amount that even Admin can do to block someone - and if they have a dynamic ISP then things really get complicated.

A technical perspective...

A dynamic IP is not a problem, the ISP will know which customer was allocated to a specific IP at a specific time.

The problem is that you have no assurance that the source IP is actually the source IP and not just forwarding packets or acting as an application level proxy.

Having said that, what people usually forget when attempting to gain anonymity is that their browser sends lots of nice HTTP headers, which can often uniquely identify them (when I say identify, in this context it only means saying 'this is the same user' - nothing more). So things like user-agent string, time-zone, plugins, etc all contribute. Ironically, the eff has recently produced a nice little tool you can use to test this: http://panopticlick.eff.org/

To collect and use this information is however a non-trivial amount of work, relies on the sysadmin here and at hotmail, and doesn't really get you much beyond saying: "yup, it's the say guy"... which you already know.

The one thing I'd suggest checking, is the headers in the emails. You will see the intermediate MTAs putting in "Receieved: " lines. If the *original* line is a dynamic IP, or obviously from a company/uni/institution then you may be in luck for actually being able to identify the real person, although why this is the case is a much more involved story and you'll still need court orders. If the originating MTA is a webmail provider, it is again a dead end.

There are other things that can be done, but like above generally far too much effort to benefit.

Practical advice would be to create a new email account, only give the address to people you know. Then try and ignore it as best you can.

Here's the plan;

We all hide.

He thinks we've all gone to another website.

He goes off looking elsewhere.

When he's gone we come out of our hiding places and have a chuckle.

On a serious note though I really do hope you get things sorted out, there's no excuse for what he is doing, it's cowardly and quite pathetic behaviour for an adult. My advice would be to just ignore, he'll get sick of sending memos and emails eventually if he gets no reaction.

Yeah this, and find out where he lives and send the girls round to kick his head in.

Maybe that is what he is looking for

Joking aside I agree with the comments on this thread. I think it is better to nip this now before his behaviour escalates.

I have to agree with this comment and many in the thread. Sad, but it happens in all walks off life but answering just keeps them bouncing back as sadly i had a stalker on here for a while but i cut all links and never replied. Its been about 4 months now that i have not been contacted thankfully.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and advice. The individual stopped contacting me back in August and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he saw the postings I made on IC about abusive members of IC.

Fingers crossed this is the matter now closed.

And the police. He can be traced. Stalking is illegal. At least when it's unwanted.
