I am wishing to purchase this film and I'm wondering, should I get Kubricks original or the remake with Jeremy Irons.

Would you all give me your opinions and reviews please?

With thanks.

ML.

I prefer the Jeremy Irons version myself. It's better shot, and Irons and Swain give a more compelling performance.

Nothing to do with the fact that Dominique Swain is hotter than Sue Lyon of course.

Don't forget to watch the nine deleted scenes.

What men in all the world have shown such daring?

I've only seen the Jeremy Irons version, but I have to say it's brilliant. Reviews of the Kubrick version seem mixed, but it's probably a must-see for Kubrick fans.

Thank you for giving me your opinion - I choose not to watch the deleted scenes after watching the first but thank you.

Yes me also. Liking Kubrick I wondered should I have seen this. You do often find that the originals are better but yes, it does have mixed reviews.

I liked both versions but my preference is for the Jeremy Irons version. Mostly because Dominique Swain was brilliant as Lolita. I think they are both worth watching though.

Hope you enjoy it! :)

Thank you very much. For some reason amazon know this to be the case and have doubled the price for the jeremy irons version. An outrage! - smiles -

I've actually just bought the book on amazon, figured I should probably read the book instead of just watching the fim.

I know it's not the same, but you can watch the Jeremy Irons version of Lolita on youtube, it's in about ten parts but completely watchable.

I am glad to hear from you Marquise, I appreciate your feedback on films, being a passion et al.

Shamefully, no I have not read the book. My life has been rather consumed with studies and I have only just got back to reading again that isn't related to chinese medicine.

Recommended I take it?

Oh the original for sure. For a start, it has the wonderful James Mason in it and a fantastic director.

Presumably you have read the book?

Yes I have seen the film and find it really tastefully done. Excellent acting and a little uncomfortable, due to the story line but really wonderful film.

Just have never seen the Kubrick original and getting a feeling that I may be purchasing it soon.

Re the book, will look forward to consuming this in the near future.

Yes. Its a classic.

Still has the power to shock content wise, due to the subject matter. A man marrying a woman to get close to her 12 year old daughter so he can sexually abuse her is no more acceptable now, then when it was written.

However, its style is non pornographic, almost poetic at times. The writing has technical virtuosity, humour and an insight into an obsession almost demonic in its fevered intensity.
