Cutting Rope (66)

This post is on the SM/Bondage/Fetish web board.

I had a guy pass-out once and cut him out in about 4 seconds, about half a second after he blacked he was on the floor and back 'in the room' about 5-10 seconds later, with EMT shears.

Had an on-location rigging interrupted and needed to get the girl out asap, EMT shears again.

I've recently started carrying a Gerber Rescue Hook (link to my website) which is way faster for ropes under tension and bodywraps, still use EMT for general cutting and also carried along with the gerber rescue hook when rigging.

The "Extreme Bondage No Safe Words" thread got me thinking...

How many of you ropers out there have ever had to use a pair of EMT shears during a scene to cut someone out of a tie in an emergency?

I know it's sods law the one time you need them you won't have them to hand, but I'm just curious as to the stats on this?

Excellent! Been after one of those for ages, but didn't know what they were called.

I use a linoleum knife (deeply concave, talon-shaped blade) but round off the point (scribing around a 2p piece) with an angle grinder, finishing with some emery paper. It's much the same as a firefighter's rescue knife for about £3.00 and 15 minutes work.

Both SP and I have a set of EMT shears each. Not as good as that hook thingy, but still do the job if needed. If I'm wandering around with rope on I carry my set as well as if I'm roping somebody up.

Neither of us have had to cut anyone out yet (touch wood) but would have no hesitation, irritation or regret in doing so. I don't think anyone should ever be made to feel bad because they had to be cut out of rope.

No rope, even if it were £100 per meter, is ever more valuable than your rope bunny. Yes it can be a pain to replace your rope, but life and limb come first, no second thoughts.

I wouldn't do rope-play with somebody who wasn't prepared to cut their ropes in an emergency. The shears are the first thing out of the box when doing rope play and the last thing to go away when the rope comes off.

If you're prone to being panicy about ropes, something with a quick-release so that it falls off may be the place to start, or something decorative rather than restraining as it has the nice feel and the attention side of it, without the restriction on moving.

Not to steal business from the above, but competition is the driving force of capitalism! A cheaper and in my opinion better rescue hook can be had here, the Benchmade Rescue 5. You can get it with either a nylon (1,000 denier I think) or Kydex sheath - I'd recommend Kydex, you can either clip it onto your belt or pocket, or hang it around your neck, and it is held securely in place without the need for a velcro retaining strap. It weighs nothing (just over one ounce), takes up no space (3 inches high), is thoroughly jimped (that's jimped, not gimped o_0) top and bottom for a sure grip, and uses 440C stainless steel hardened to 58-60 on the Rockwell scale, so it will hold an edge for a very long time, yet is easy to sharpen if you do dull it. As mentioned, it has a black oxide coating for corrosion protection. Lifetime warranty from Benchmade, and if you don't fancy sharpening it yourself they also have a 'lifesharp' policy where you send them the knife and they'll return it to a factory edge free of charge. Free, next day delivery from Heinies, you can't go wrong!

I always stress when teaching that there should be no hesitation in cutting the ropes, and for the hemp purchased form me I offer a fat discount to anyone replacing ropes they got from me having had to cut them in any kind of emergency.

Hmmm. Are you sure? Not even if they're really annoying? Or what if it's new rope and you had to walk a long way to buy it?

Thanks, but are it's orifice and blade big enough for 10mm jute? Couldn't really tell. Most of them are too small, that I've found.

You can get a rope / line cutter which is similar to the one "pimped" for about a tenner from diving shops. They will work but emt shears are, imho, the best all rounders.

I have cut through 11mm rope with them before (non bondage circumstances I hasten to add). I try to avoid cutting through my play rope however some scenes benefit from cutting instead of untying (as do some clothing and underwear)
