Why is it ridiculous? Anybody who signed up for the army in the last six years must have known what he was signing up to do. Join the British army, fight in the occupation of Afghanistan. At this point there is nobody fighting on the British side in Afghanistan who did not choose to be there. The guys who were in the military when the war started sure they were following orders, but those men will have had the opportunity to leave since, and the new recruits could have waited this one out before signing up. At some point every soldier we have out there will have been offered an escape and not taken it. That makes the soldiers fair game for protest in my opinion, because they volunteered to fight specifically in this war. I wouldn't protest them though because frankly this war has actually become a little more serious in recent years than it started out.

Problem with the war in Afghanistan is that when it started it was just the USA wanting to kill some Muslims over 9/11, fair play, blood for blood. Bomb some kids, shoot some goat herders, bring Osama Bin Laden home in little bits. But now there's the large matter of Pakistan potentially collapsing, so Britain now has to basically win an unwinnable war to stop that happening while most of the US military is dicking around in Iraq. Afghanistan is quite possibly going to be our Vietnam, depending on how Pakistan fares. Pulling the troops out could be catastrophic. Winning the war is impossible. This is why people talk about military quagmires as a very bad thing, we're in Afghanistan until we lose.

Brave people voluteer to die for their country, and what do you do? sit on your arse all day reading your socialist crap telling white people how crap they are and how they should be more accommodating of ethnic minorities. You really sum up why I hate socialism so much.

I do think, and I don't mean to be horrible, that you know you may be killed if you join the forces. It doesn't make it better, or right, or fair. But it is what they choose to do, and we should support them in that decision. But in a war, we must expect casualties. Wishing it doesn't happen to our loved ones doesn't change that fact, unfortunately.

I feel sorry for the parents, I sometimes wonder if we'd be better off banning young lads under 25 to go to war. They should at least have a fair shot at life as an adult for a while before enduring the hardships of war. Then again, I feel equally sorry for wives left behind with small children to take care of. In my view wars should be abolished altogether. Nothing good ever came of it...
