Yes I know, talk about flouncing, just because my camera wouldn't do what I wanted it to.

Two immediate things helped, one was re-reading the manual and checking the settings, amazing what using the wrong setting can do, especially when you set it the same way again, d'oh! I also visited the ken Rockwell site at http://www.kenrockwell.com going there reminded me of a few of the basics that I'd forgotten as I had my little strop. The site also gave me a few ideas for changing settings so that I can concentrate on the image rather than the mechanics. It seems to be working.

I've done one other thing, bought a new, but old camera, the Nikon D40 and I love it because I've got it set up exactly how I want already. Okay, I spent most of the money I'd saved for a carpet on it, but if I'm back taking pictures again I'm not spending money on other things, so I'll save it up again soon enough.

Arrrgggghhhnot Ken Rockwell !!! The guy is a laughing stock!

If you want some decent photography have a look at Cambridge in colour , the galleries and the tutorials. Also buy the digital photographers handbook by Tom Ang - tell you all you need to know for starting out.

@ flake_1. I don't agree with everything he says and I noticed a few glaring inconsistencies, but, I found a number of things on the site which were a great help. We have to take inspiration from wherever we find it and I'm already looking at a number of other sites.

The thing that you have to remember about good old Ken, is that he gets paid a not inconsiderable amount of money to review and push products by certain companies.

(*cough* NIKON *cough*)

Noo, surely you jest...

Now who'd thunk it...

On the other hand, I have looked at Canons in the past and recently and personally I'm not keen or I would have got a 350D, currently I'm loving the My Menu feature on the D40, that is serious menu joy!

I would agree actually, i don't tend to rely on Ken as gospel, but he does give a really good logical and sensible account of how to set up the nikons to get a good result first time. They can be tweaked later but they are a great starting point. I like his lens comparisons too and find those helpful!

The D40 is a lovely little camera actually, i owned a canon 350d and borrowed a D40 at the same time, the canon outperformed on some functions and was better in low light, but overall.. the d40 was preferential, sharper and better colour rendition. So much so that i made that unusual switch from Canon to Nikon cameras afterwards.

Happy shooting!
