An odd combination I know but there is a connection in there somewhere and not what you might think at all. I was having my usual walk to work from the tube station along the Thames embankment, so lucky lucky lucky, it has to be one of the best city walks you can do. The sun was shining, the weather warm, Tower Bridge looking stunning as ever, the Thames shimmering and urmmm rats. Yes rats. You see what happened was as I was walking along I could hear the alarms going meaning the bridge was about to open so I slipped to a dawdle and took a longer route going around the back of a grassy area. And there they were, 3 rats, noncholent as you like nibbling at something - crumbs? dead men's fingers? on the footpath. Couple of pigeons strutting around too. But bugger me rigid 3 rats, 2 massive huge ones the size of large cats and a smaller one (ahh an ickle baby one).
Well they weren't cat sized to be fair. But I was surprised. They weren't. They didn't even twitch as I side stepped round them. Kind of cute looking really. Ahh come on they are. I have to admit the last time I looked at one closely was about 6 years ago when one of my cats wrestled one in through the cat flap, a dead one thank god. But it has to be said other than the pointy teeth thing I think they're sweet. Maybe I should get one as a pet? They're supposed to be intelligent aren't they?
Anyway I promised you fantasies didn't I? Well the connection with rats? None whatsoever although now I think of it I always had a gastly fascination in the rats around the face scenario in George Orwell's 1984. No desire to experience it (hard limit). I think it was just the horror of it that gave me a feeling close to the stomach clenching feeling other ermmm nasty cruel things give me.
