I vividly remember this book from when I was young but the details are a bit sketchy. A family shoot some ducks and then get turned into ducks by the girl with a magic finger...I think...Do they then get shot? I really can't remember. Typically dark Roald Dahl kids story. |

I remember the film version where the girl with the magic finger showed all her friends and in the end the pool guy cured them of their lesbianism. I believe it took some liberties with the text. |

Ah yes, the Magic Finger, one of the great Roald Dahl's stories. It's quite a short one, here is a summary: The girl in this story is eight years old, and has always been able to do the "Magic Finger" when she gets angry. When she points at somebody who has made her cross, strange and terrible things happen to them (she makes her teacher grow whiskers and a big bushy tail). One day she sees her neighbours coming home from hunting, carrying a lovely young deer, and this makes her so angry that she puts the magic finger on them all. Nothing happens just then, and the next day, the family go out to hunt ducks, and kill sixteen of them. The next morning, the family find that they've become really small (duck-sized), and have wings instead of arms. They fly out of the window, and suddenly see four enormous ducks in the garden, with arms instead of wings, who take over their house. The family ends up building a nest in the tree and spending the night. The next morning they have a big shock when they find the enormous ducks pointing their own guns up at them from the ground. There's a memorable scene when the parents are begging the ducks not to shoot their children, to which the duck replies "Yesterday, you shot all six of my children". The ducks make the family promise to throw away their guns, saying "by the way, may I congratulate you for the nest; for a first effort, it's pretty good". Then suddenly the family are back to normal. The magic finger girl comes along the next day, to find out what happened. As the family tell her the story, suddenly a loud bang is heard, and she races towards the sound, saying "they'll be nesting in the trees tonight, every one of them!" But it's more fun being a girl! |
