Yes, the problem with appealing for consistency is that it could go the wrong way; rather than permitting "extereme" porn they could ban certain films (though rather unlikely that they'd legislate to close down a huge chunk of the film industry; money and big business do count) Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/226772/

Cleopatra at least threatens something as nasty: 'This gold I'll melt and pour down thy ill-utttering throat', and the violence in Titus Andronicus is notoriously extreme, and easy to copy. In the main, people do not copy film violence, because they can see how horrible it is, and even if you got rid of it all, the certain vicious percentage would always find some other form of inspiration.

Romantic Comedies should be banned. They're not funny and they create unrealistic expectations.
Throwing eggs at Nick Griffin is counterproductive. To really confound him, the protesters should arrive in an open-top bus filled with 200 incredibly pretty FHM "high-street honey" type glamour girls who simply point at him and laugh derisively at the end of every sentence.

I don't think it's a double standard, because there are occasional "uproars" about alleged links between films (not to mention computer games, music, etc) and murders. Many of the people supporting the "extreme porn" law would gladly support greater restrictions on all of this stuff too. We still have the BBFC which can and does routinely censor media even for adults, and this stemmed from such an uproar back in the 80s. I think a better example of a double standard is the fact that we never see things like religion, or I don't know, eating lettuce, being demonised, even though the same arguments could be made - it's only the "unpopular" things in society. It's also more a double standard from the Government itself. The arguments applied to the "extreme porn" law apply to violent films, and to all porn - the reason these aren't criminalised is either a double standard, or because it knows it can't get away with them. It's easier to scapegoat and criminalise something viewed or possessed only by a minority. I wouldn't want any porn, or any violent films, to be criminalised - but if the Government were to propose that, there would be far greater opposition to such plans. It's a bit like calling their bluff: "If you really believe these arguments, you should criminalise all of this material". But as always with calling someone's bluff, you should be careful of shooting yourself in the foot, as it might turn out that they are able to ban all the other material too. Sign the statement against criminalisation of possession "extreme" images. Petition against plans to criminalise sexual cartoons appearing to depict anyone under 18. Me too. It's 6ft deep and at the bottom of my garden.
Pissed myself laughing when the little mockney twat had to be escorted out of the Spartak crowd, once somebody told them The Football Factory wasn't a documentary (I can't find the real thing, but this is almost as funny) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QbJ6Woj5hE&featu... Tovarich is a combination of frothy comedy with bitter political undertones.- googlism

Bugger! I can't decide whether to go out and gun someone down after watching an old John Wayne film or whether to succumb to the influence of the Robin Hood series on TV and use a bow and arrow instead. No, hang on, I've been watching the news so I think I'll just go and wipe out two families and their friends by bombing their wedding party.

Two words. Titus Andronicus. Lavinia is raped, her hands cut off, and her tongue torn out. She's later murdered by her own family as a way of cleansing the dishonour. People have their throats slit, before being cooked into pies and fed to their mother. You were saying? Gore porn has been around for centuries, honey. Dodger

We put on a production of this when I was with a drama group. Our Lavinia was always in tears after the show because of the massive emotional investment... www.felicityfatale.co.uk ~ Fun Photography

Stopped watching movies years ago, and v.rarely watch any telly. Many vanillas I know seem addicted. Eager to soak up gratuitous violence, car-chases, bombings, mass slaughter, burnings, torture, casual mutilations, rapes, etc, etc, ad infinitum. Hard to believe the talk they come out with, absolutely desensitised, some, to all forms of human brutality. For some it's become their fun every weekend - to go out, get pissed and batter some unsuspecting bloke to the ground. Which of course can't be connected to all the street-fighting vids they so love... But censorship? No, simply because it is so often misdirected. The silky-smooth soothing voice of reason and logic. (You WILL feel much better and speak more sense while very securely tied-up...) Edited 30 Jun 09, 10:26 AM by SirLashleyS |
