If everyone used everyday words it would be less colourful... I think it's quite nice to read something expressed with a more adventurous version of the english language, rather than all saying the same thing in the same way - if we can understand it where's the problem? Is it adventurous? Is being adventurous not grasping originality, finding new ways of expressions, utilising contemporary language in a way that uses initiative? What I want to know is why using the language I describe is so popular in a bdsm sphere. If nobody else used such terminology, I think it is very unlikely that others would consider it appropriate to use it. Therefore it must be a learned peer behaviour or it is given that this language is somehow acknowledged as and linked in with being associated with bdsm. And if people don't use that language in everyday life (and I don't know a single soul who does, and find it hard to believe that people who use it here sign letters to their local council with 'be well')then why does it feel fitting to utilise it when engaging with other bdsm folk? Because that isn't original - is it? That's looking to see what other people do, and following suit.

To clarify, what I am trying to establish is why this language seems so popular in bdsm circles. I have browsed over knitting, beekeeping, music, skydiving and potholing social websites, and have yet to see anyone sign off with 'be well', or discuss their quest to 'seek knowledge' when looking for a new honeycomb/potholing experience. So why the Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons and He-Man (by the power of Greyskull) terminology when 'looking for knowledge' about tying someone to a table and sticking cocktail sticks in their nipples?

Hey... I wasn't saying it is right or wrong, original or resurrected. People will type the way they want to, no matter what anyone else thinks. Is getting frustrated by the sort of language used on blogs/boards/memos any different from the frustrations suffered by the spelling police?

I musn't be paying enough attention as I've not noticed this kind of language on here. At least not majorly enough for me to notice it. It is, however, very very popular in pagan forums! That much I remember from my teenage years. |
