Profile pictures are counter productive when looking for people. Very few people photograph accurately.

I don't know what you mean by 'very few people photograph accurately'.

What I mean is very few people have a photo on their profile which is a fairly accurate representation of the person you meet in the flesh. Most people photograph either badly or well. A selection process goes on whereby people usually select a picture which shows them in a good light. For example we have two pictures of Jennifer Lopez, one of which she would have on her IC profile and one which may be how she turns up at the pub.

I have met a few people from here and wondered how drunk were you when you posted that picture?

If the camera is so close that you can only see face and cleavage, it can only mean one thing.

Frankly, I am utterly shocked by the subject matter. It is totally wrong and incorrect to say that ugly people do not put up pictures on their profile.

I have seen loads of profiles donning pictures of ugly people. It puts me off my cornflakes in the morning :)

...we know you're pig ugly. why pretend you can't have pictures because of your 'high powered six figure job in the city' everybody knows that's a load of rubbish. have a nice day.

Hmmm. I work with children for Social Services - can you imagine trying to explain BDSM and IC to my manager if I was 'outed'?

Forgive me for being a tad rude - but surely having no pic on display is better than the one of you in that cardigan...

it never fails to amaze me how seriously some folk take all this...does anyone actually believe the op was serious?? the post was surely meant as a bit of fun, a wind up, and here you all are, mother teresa et al, for some reason defending your right to remain 'faceless' on here, you dont need to, its your right, equally you dont need to get uptight about others who choose to stir you up a bit (your choice), and responding with personal jibes is not really the way forward, where has the fun gone???

Oh, come on, have compassion. Internet profiles are very important if you're socially retarded.

I feel sad that no one likes me cos I don't have a picture up. I also feel ugly.

Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you've decided to look beyond the imperfections.

Once the idea that it's odd or suspicious to be anonymous is overcome, it can become the foundation for a remarkably egalitarian /b/rotherhood.

I've not seen any research supporting that idea of general social cohesion resulting from anonymity in the CMC field, but maybe there is someone outside of that area. One role anonymity does play is in the fostering of hyperpersonal intimacy, but that tends to be a result of longer term asynchronous communication, whereas the disadvanges I was alluding too happen because of initial impressions.

Nor does it consistently lead to objectification; the ubiquity of appearance-based prejudices (racism, sexism, ageism...) rather suggests that the opposite will more often be the case, unless one happens to be an affluent young white male.

If people treat others as equals simply because they assume they are not black, female, old/young then that is objectifying them just as much as treating them as not equal because they are. I think it also makes my point quite well: That anonymity is likely to lead to projection rather than communication.

What down sides can you see

Human social interactions are framed by seemingly simple trigger abilities, one important one being the brains capacity for recognising faces. Removing any of those abilities reduces the capacity for empathy and increases the tendency to assume everyone thinks the same, which has negative connotations both for online dating and for more general social interaction.

On a more general note (one that Bonanza had already specifically excluding from applying to him) face pictures are far more likely to attract sexual attention (actually full body pictures are the best, but they must include the head). This might particularly apply to men (from some experiments I did on another site a while ago).

Oh Chris, what a load of cobblers.

*snip* From my own point as view as someone very interested in the subtitles of communication, it seems fairly obvious that facial recognition plays a big social role.

My bold.

Sorry, I know it's not big or clever, but I think my irony meter just blew up.

Oh, and as one of the faceless - no I'm not being drawn into this again. The previously linked thread says it all.

I'm not sure how irony applies: 'subtitles', works just as well as 'subtleties' in context. :-D

*Perhaps* ironically, my interest in both does originally stem from my dyslexia.

It did occur to me - then again, I'm not quite sure how subtitling would improve communication on IC :-D

Just made me giggle - wasn't having a pop at ya.
