Much as it pains me to say this, but Private Eye is a tabloid for people who are intelligent and articulate, dressed up as satire. Look at the way he continues to hint at Mosley's SM session being a Nazi fantasy to get laughs, when it clearly wasn't and the High Court agreed. It's only satire and humour though, right? But it perpetuates the impression that Mosley is into something he's not, in a way that damages his reputation. Clive Coleman really did come accross as totally biased and needing a hard slap. And he kept on about the five women being 'prostitutes', which pissed me off.

Like any business, the tabloids have insurance for such legal matters and most of the tabloids are owned by Rupert Murdoch.
Without exposes Hislop wouldn't have anything to take the p*ss out of. I agree but we're not dealing with reputable publications, this is the gutter press. The NOTW don't even follow the PCC own rules on prior notification and completely ignored them on the day of this particular expose, even to the point of running a different first edition of their paper so that MM wouldn't see the publication and apply for an injunction.
The damage was done on the day of the expose and is irrevocable. MM will never regain his dignity and will always be remembered firstly for the expose.
Likewise the women will always be known as prostitutes. To those that matter, they will always be known as women!

I have just sent this email to Clive Coleman: Dear Mr Coleman I was very interested to see your programme about Max Mosley's attempt to curtail the freedom of the press, but somewhat disappointed by the stance that you appear to have adopted; while I am sure that no-one really wants to stop the press revealing important truths, do we really want to have a tabloid press that assumes the right to spy into our bedrooms? It is not titillation; it is humilliation, name calling and intimidation - not just of those exposed but of everyone that even considers that they might possibly have a little kink that might be exposed, and that is a very large number of people. What I do want to know is why you seem to think that I, as a sadomasochist, have a lesser right to privacy than 'normal' people. I did not choose my sexuality; I am dealing with it, and I'm very pleased to be able to write, enjoying it. I cannot see any reason why I should be considered fair game by any prurient and salacious newspaper. Can you explain to me why it is right that I should be fearful of being exposed by a tabloid journalist? One interesting thing the program came up with was confidentiality agreements having some legal force. It would be possible to have an agreement to confidentiality as part of a club membership, though this would mean the club would have to proceed against anyone who posted about what happened everywhere, eg IC, as it could be used as a defence that the Club didn't enforce those agreements, in the same way as Trade Marks and Patents infringements have to be enforced to keep them valid. Science, the only religion that works even if you don't believe in it. |
