I tend to stay clear of this lot as to offer them help means that you might be doing something illegal but not all the law is against BDSM,its ironic that bondage has been legal since the 16th century, yes the law is full of contridictions and sometimes they work in our favour. But as for vounteering for this group,I would stear clear as they have poor veting security and the members amongst them have no history of practising BDSM.Considering that I have been practising for over ten years now, some of them have little or no experience. Also the organisation has been going through political infighting so I would avoid them like hell.

As a former Spanner Trustee myself I can assure you that all the trustees are very much BDSM practitioners.
Where on earth did you get this nonsense from? Maybe you are talking about a different group??

Yes I wondered that too. This is more than once the same issue has come up in the thread and I am not sure why either as it's clearly not true. Maybe someone has misheard or misremembered some information? For example, I think at a workshop I was at a few years back the person from Spanner said they do not practice SM in the UK because of the law here.
ETA this point has been corrected:

I think the accurate quote is that they do not feel that they can practice BDSM to the extent that they want to in the UK because of the law.

I can certainly vouch for the fact that all current trustee's practice BDSM and I am not aware of anyone who was a trustee in the past who did not. I guess this one can just be racked up to being a BDSM urban legend.

Didn't one of the original Spanner defendants (as opposed to trustees) say that he no longer practices BDSM out of fear of being arrested again?
That could be where the confusion has come from.
