Is it just me or has anyone else ever considered the risk of catching STD's from things like Whips and Canes? Does anyone else see this as a risk that may have possibly not been considered before. If it is only you and your Sub, then you maybe ok but what about Venues and Parties where the same Cane may be used on other people? Although I'm quite into the Romance of getting the Cane from a Dom, the sensation is so unusual that even if quite lightly used that I cannot say it really turns me on. Having said that I know you can get addicted, so maybe I may revisit that scene in the future. Does anyone make it a practice to always wipe their Canes down with some sort of Antiseptic or would you say the risk is fairly minimal. It's something I've always worried about but maybe my fears are unfounded? Edited Tue 9 Jun 09, 5:29 PM by TvTomboy

Well yes you should certainly be aware of that. Canes are relatively cheap so if you cut someone use a new cane on someone else if you are concerned. Bamboo is porus and even with a synthetic coating I'd not be certain using a suitable cleaner on them. metal, plastic and carbon fiber in my opnion can be suitably cleaned with the right cleaner. Rubber tends to get micro fissures that can harbor bodily fluids. Many people trust airdrying for a long period will leave any bactieria or viruses dead. Yes it is HIV that is passed on, that's the virus. AIDS is a result from developing immune system problems from being HIV positive. One doesn't catch AIDS, one developes it. *editted to actually answer the question - sorry* I wouldn't use the same cane on a different person at a club, take several and use with only one person each. Then work out what you'd want to use as a cleaning process. General antispectic is not really good enough in my opnion. Edited 9 Jun 09, 1:02 PM by StrangeAngle

OK I'll say what I do as otherwise my post doesn't really help. Even if no signs of blood I'll wipe with decontamination wipes. Dettox household spray is good too, make sure the surface is wet and covered completely but don't over do it, canes don't like getting water logged! Leave to dry hanging up for a week. In theory if you want to be really good, wipe and dry before use but you'll find most bacteria on the subs skin that you are likely to find on a stored cane. At a party or event I'd take several and use on only one person each. At home I'll clean them all as above.

I don't know. A vaguely educated guess would be that's it's technically possible, but extremely unlikely. However, I don't think it hurts to simply be hygenic - I certainly wouldn't fancy the idea of any implement being used on me immediately after it had been used on someone else. I don't have the statics on me but cutting someone really badly and transfering that blood to another who you cut? Well I'd say that has the same level of risk of any other blood to blood contact. Would you share needles and anal/vaginal toys?

No I thought exactly the same, catching hiv is actually not that easy or certain even with unprotected sex. I have read about couples where one partner has been unknowingly hiv positive and have been having unprotected sex for ages and the other partner is still negative. Having said that any risk is big enough and best avoided. edited for spelling Edited 9 Jun 09, 1:39 PM by submark32

No not just you - I guess its a bit of a bugger if you happen to be the one person that unlucky. Actually HIV is pretty hard to transmit - hepatitis, especially hep c, is a much more resilient and easily transmited virus.

Quite. And HIV isn't the only thing we should be worried about. I do a fair amiount of nasty mucky play but it's just not nice to be hit with a filthy cane

within our club and so far with my experience in BDSM i haven't needed to be beaten so hard i bled, and within the club i go to we have a blood room with sterile implements. yes its pure common sense to make sure your toys are clean, but unless you indulge in a lot of blood play.
bite me... please? | ||

HIV is actually a very sensitive virus outside of the body. It dies very quickly even in spilled blood, so you'd need to first cut one person, then cut another one with the same cane within a comparatively short space of time (we're talking minutes here) in order for it to be a true risk. You don't "catch" AIDS, it is the result of having HIV. Having said that, it's probably a good thing from a hygiene perspective to wipe down canes with an antiseptic. It should be noted however, that they're fairly porous (the canes, I mean), so that's never going to be a complete answer either (unless you are only using man-made materials). There are going to be risks in everything we do. Informing yourself so that you know WHAT the risks are, and then making an Informed decision based on that is the solution. |
