Has anyone had experience of this they can share...
Especially of, getting from Gare de Nord to Gare de Lyon, as quickly as possible.
And, is it better to get the RER or a taxi?

It depends when you are travelling and where you are on the train. The RER is really simple and takes about 10 minutes but you'll probably need to add on at least another ten on for buying tickets and getting to the platform. Taxis are simpler but the majority of people on the train seem to get taxis so unless you are at the front of the train and one of the first off you'll be waiting for ages.

Never assume a taxi driver in Paris knows where they are going. Expect them to be rude, occasionally they aren't but it's the exception. Traffic in Paris can also be very slow at times. Use the RER and get a ticket from a machine, so you'll need some low value Euro notes and coins ready, otherwise you may face a very long queue to buy one. Take the RER or the metro, don't bother with taxis and no it doesn't take long. And the small change in euros is very handy for all public transport “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act” - George Orwell

Thank you for the replies. How safe did you find being a woman traveling alone? I am interested, in how it was for you.. I found it easy, but thats because i took the London to Lille connection for Dijon, not the Paris, Gare de Nord to Gare de Lyon...So it was easier for me. Can't answer that question from a woman's perspective but the Paris Metro is similar to the London Undeground, in the central area the metro is busy day and night, with stations full of staff, especially if you have just come off a train. Just the usual things to watch for pickpockets, bag snatchers in crowds as in any big city. Only time would be worrying about safety would be travelling to the outer areas of Paris late at night, when the trains and stations can be deserted.

If travelling to the South it is better to change at Lille if possible and not mess about getting across Paris. Otherwise the Metro/RER is ok, I wouldn't bother with taxis. International man of mystery

It's a quick trip by train. And very cheap. Plenty of ticket machines around to get tickets from also. We bought at the ticket office and the queue went down very quickly. I'll repeat the advice not to bother with taxis although if you are coming off Eurostar you can book a taxi via a link on their site and have it waiting for you. I forget the price but it was no more than ten euro. Much better to spend a few cents on the Metro/RER though! I was travelling in the mornings and on a weekday so can't comment on safety if alone at night but the place seemed well-staffed and there were no problems. I'm about as submissive as dracula on speed.... Edited 7 Jun 09, 6:42 PM by zelie

I have travelled on Eurostar extensively by myself although on the Brussels one, not Paris. I have never had any problems, but I suspect my size and height with an "I will kick your arse, bitch" look on my face works a treat. I have travelled a lot on my own to many (Western) countries and not once had any problems. If you use common sense and avoid being on your own in a carriage or walking alone to stations you'll be fine. “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act” - George Orwell |
