Self-Realisation (2)

I no longer spout random quotes like I used to in college. Not even the Simpsons, Invader ZIM or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Am I no longer a geek? Has my pop culture knowledge suffered at the hands of my world-travels? Am I simply a better conversationalist? Or am I just an old fuddy-duddy at the ripe old age of 27?

Oddly, it's more that these things have worked their way almost completely into my vocabulary. I constantly use variations on Homer Simpson's "mmmm doughnuts" voice, have appropriated the word "thingy" from Jonhen Vasquez, and most likely a number of other small features that I'm unaware of. However, there is a distinct drop in the number quote-heavy conversations I participate in.

Perhaps it's just that I don't remember (physical failure, or just can't be bothered?) movies very well anymore. Sukebe always has to remind me what I've seen. In fact, chances are, if you hear me use quotes in conversation, it's more than likely Sukebe I'm quoting than any movie I've seen.

I feel somewhat lessened. :(

I can sympathise enormously! My current state of half-a-brian results in none of the old conversations of old, where we could out-Goon one another, complete the Lehrer, deteriorate into partial scripts from anything starring Alec Guiness and recognise the Wilde dialogue. Now you'll be lucky if I can recognise the film title once you've described the plot (as proven repeatedly yesterday - sorry VV!) and I'll insist I have no idea what film you're referring to about even if it was me who organised the cinema trip.

A lame "um, I think I recognise that line," really doesn't compare conversationally to being able to counter with the next line...

Yes, there's the memory issue (and I am hideously older than you, so have, it would seem, significantly less experience to recall on this one) but for me there's the fact that too many of my quotes are from outdated backwaters.

My rich source of Hitchhikers and Python quotes have had to be shelved, as young upstarts reel out a whole raft of more modern cultural references.

I can't keep up with the cool kids any more. *sigh*
