One again I look at the Weather forecast to see that the weather for the next week or so is set to be fair, except for Monday. Why do bank holidays have to be fixed dates in the year? Why can't we have the Queen look at the weather forecast for the three working days either side of the bank holiday and say right, Tuesday (or whenever) is the best looking day, that's the bank holiday and let us know.
It's not like the whole country is shut on the day anymore, and with communications we have in this modern age it could easily be announced. If you're having an event, say a Barbie on the bank holiday, what difference does the day of the week make, just tell all your invitees it's on the bank holiday and they turn up on what ever day the Queen picks. Think of the tax revenues the government would get from the gambling on what day it is as well. Really, I can't see a down side to this one.
What's that you say, you want to use the Monday to go away for a long weekend? Fine, take a day's leave and enjoy your trip. Having these flexible bank holidays has two upsides from this. First it would mean that people would spread their three day weekends though out the year so travel systems wouldn't be prone to peak congestion and secondly, because you can't predict when the actual public day will be, either you'll get a four day weekend or, even better (for the country), you'll stay in you local area and support your local economy.
And while we're at it, why are they called bank holidays any more? Surely after the last 18 months the one group of people who should be working (a) to fix the problems and (b) as punishment anyway are the bankers themselves. If they want the day off they can provide some traditional middle-ages entertainment - in the stocks on the village greens of this pleasant land next to the politicians on the ducking stools.
