Define 'insanity'? If you look into Mental Health you will find that it is indeed a broad church with many different, and sometimes competing, denominations. You simply cannot use the term 'insanity' in the way you have as you may as well have asked whether everyone in BDSM breathes or whether everyone in BDSM goes to the bathroom. Are you talking about mental illness? Are you talking about personality disorders? Are you referring to someone who is stressed and who suffers from anxiety and depression, which about 1 in 5 of us will at some point in our lives, or are you referring to the more serious, the more damaging and the potentially dangerous personality disorders such as borderline, narcissism, histrionic, antisocial, sociopath and the, cue screeching sound, the types who end up as the subject matter of Hitchcock films? I have posted on here before that many professional shrinks, counsellors and therapists would have a field day reading the stuff on here. There are known personality disorders where, for example, people who cut or scar themselves are considered to have a mental health personality disorder - a real and serious illness. Likewise, in areas of transexualism, if a transgendered person mentions anything fetish related during their counselling they are often put down as being not a true transgendered person but a fetishist - and are often denied the gender reassignment surgery that they crave. Do I think that there are some on here with mental health and/or personality disorders? Yes, undoubtedly. But you can say that about any group of people in an office, on a bus or train or even as part of a typical large family. The more interesting question is whether BDSM attracts an ABOVE AVERAGE number of people who display possible signs of mental illness and personality disorders? I'll let you work out the answer to that yourself.
Btw, at some point in life we're all paranoid!

On the contrary, there is a degree of insanity in those who repress their BDSM urges. It simply isn't natural.

Might it be that people who are considered insane are actually normal, and so called normal people are the ones who are insane? Therefore, people into BDSM could be normal or insane. What am I on about.....................? Edited 18 May 09, 8:07 PM by Curious_II

Best comment I ever heard about this sort of thing was made by two people with special needs...roughly it was 1)"they should line up all the mad people in the world and shoot them" 2) "who would pull the triggers?"
