This has been running through my mind all day. I read it quite a while ago, but it seems particularly pertinent right now, in a time of change and decisions.
Thought I would share it here. I think that for me it is one of those bits of writing that you absorb and can never shake off, always coming back to you when you need it.
Amid the Boxes There's nothing wrong with safe. 'Safe' bakes bread. 'Safe' does not think too heavily. 'Safe' does as it's told. We all need 'safe' at points, and without it we wouldn't be here. When you were a child and you pulled the duvet over you to hide from the night - that was 'safe'. Safe isn't spectacular. If you really think you can step out and have effect without taking risks, without the possibility of getting your fingers burned, then I don't know what game you're playing. There is no safe word. It's the science of Hermes: mirrors, shortcuts and tightropes. If you're not willing to put the effort in to make sure you don't put a foot wrong then you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. Look at the Fool card in the tarot: you either step off the cliff or you don't. No trepidatious half-steps. Give nothing and you get nothing. You take steps wisely, you don't kick dust in the face of angels, but safe? None of it's safe. - Peter Grey |
