Some hemp rope used to be treated with horse or mink fat oil too. (the major suppliers have changed to mineral/vegetable based oils, but a few still use/sell mink oil or baku).

The faux leather floggers are not too bad. My ex had one company add little steel rivets added to a faux leather flogger which gave it a nicer thud as the weight of faux leather is a bit too light.

The metal studs were flat to the faux leather so they didn't cut in.

Jacksfloggers will make up custom floggers for you, depending on their complexity and being able to get hold of the materials. Plus he really knows how to make something 'throw' correctly.

I made it with 15mm cotton rope from http://www.bound-to-please.co.uk/ which they have in red, black and white. I don't think you can get such a thick rope in soft cotton anywhere else. She also sells a thick [10mm] silk rope in purple and red which would also make an excellent flogger.

Just one tip put a knot about 4 cm from the end of each strand and let the ends fray so that you get a soft tastle followed by a hard knot on the end of each strand, such a lovely feeling.
