I have come across Gumtree myself and do not see anything interesting that would make me use that website for anything. Gumtree is a sort of internet equivalent of newspaper's classfied advertising sections. When I came across this article in today's Sunday Herald titled Scottish Swingers Are Hijacking Online Listings Sites and this paragraph here says, "Gumtree's Scottish sites - covering Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Dundee and Aberdeen - last night contained almost 26,000 adverts looking for men and women to fill a variety of specialist needs, from simple "hugs and kisses" to graphically described S&M acts". This is like if anyone who could not find a BDSM partner on a BDSM website. Out of desperation, people would use websites which are intended for ordinary classified ads to post personal ads which are "largely unregulated". The article mentions another website known as Craiglist and says it is "similar to Gumtree" and can be used all around the world. But "Craigslist has been under particular scrutiny in America following the murder of a masseuse and the robbery of a prostitute in Boston hotels" although it is not intended for adult personal ads.

I met one of my last girlfriends via Gumtree, and a whole host of friends. Maybe it's cause I'm a girl, and get my pick, but I found some fantastic people and would definitely do it again. As a sex worker, I found craigslist to be one of the only places I could quickly and cheaply advertise on with minimal issues. Though apparently now I have to be on the alert for abusive asshole cops... yay. As a personal site, too, craigslist rocks my world and I've been using it about twice a year for 4 years or so. A well-written, interesting ad with a clever title and some good photos will generally serve you well there. I struck gold on craigslist and met a lovely Canuck. I agree with the abovel a well-written ad will reel in the goods. Gumtree seems like a magnet for complete and utter time wasters, freaks and geeks as well as sad desperate men.
With that said, I use both |

I have used both, met some people, had some fun.. Just the same as every internet site with a dating section IMO. A mixture of genuine people, timewasters and freaks. Give me what I need, not what I want. |

Never heard of Gumtree but use Craigslist with some success. Really depends what you seek. Dont rattle your sabres at me as an introduction. Be polite and I'll respond in kind. Edited 30 Apr 09, 12:26 AM by Italia_Vamp |

I utilised Gumtree to find my flat, but dating....Nah! Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body........ Rather, to skid in, broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, WOW, what a ride! |
