I asked on friday for people to vote on which blog they would like to read. Jahc99 suggested working them all into one, a challenge I accept as its easier than it seems, they are all pretty much the same blog, written at different times but with the same end result. So ladies, gentlemen and those who are unsure I give you the edited highlights from each of the unpublished blogs, and the final conclusion.....
At least in Babel..... .... Whilst everyone may have been saying the same thing, the difference in language made for some variety. Here it seems that variety is lacking now.
Besieged by 1000 typewriters It used to be said that if you sit 1000 monkeys at 1000 typewriters eventually you would get the works of Shakespeare, then not long after the birth of the internet someone added "but now thanks to usenet we know this is not true"
It seems that rather than a random variety throwing up an epic, the usenet analogy is nearer the truth, rather than discovering shakespeare, we find all the monkeys start typing the same thing with an occasional unpolished gem, rather than rubbish with that masterpiece.
IC is what I use to support my theory, there are occasionally some very good threads, with some very good conversations, but all too often those small unpolished gems are buried amongst the mindless repetition.
This dominant masochist Not technically an accurate title, but perhaps more eyecatching than the correct title of "Intellectual Self Harm".
There comes a point at which I must realise that I am banging my head against a virtual wall here. There is occasionally a thought provoking thread on here, but it seems that actually challenging the supposedly open-minded on here about their beliefs, explaining that words can have meanings outside the ones they choose, that morality varies from person to person, society to society is just that, virtual headbanging. Well mine is beginning to hurt to the extent I must take notice of this indulgence in virtual self-harm.
I sometimes think I have actually got through to someone, challenged their ideas and made them think about them and where they come from. Just about every time it seems that there comes a point where the thought processes of such people become too difficult, or too frightening so they revert to the default, that of a monkey typing the same as everybody else.
repressive regimes and regulations. Following on from my one line blog where a couple of lines from the film V for Vendetta were mentioned I figured it was worthy of a reprise, but this time concentrating on the line "If you want to know who to blame, look in the mirror"
Much fuss is made on here about repression, yet we are the most repressive of all. Our mantras of SSC, RACK, Consent, all parroted without due thought, binding us down. We complain we are not free to be ourselves, yet at the same time we hide away, scared of "inflicting" our true selves on some public that doesn't explicitly consent.
Any poll on any new policy should read as follows
Do you think xxxxxxx should be legislated against
a) yes
b) no
c) well to be really honest, it doesnt affect me, or I couldn't really give a shit, but I know what the politically acceptable answer is so I'll go with that.
This does not just apply to the government and new laws, but on a more basic level to our posts on here. If somebody posts a question, and our only reply is to follow the pack, is our reply our own? Have we actually thought about the issue at hand? If our reply is one of revulsion is it actually necessary to post at all if we are not being asked to partake in the act questioned?
Here's your sign There is an american comic by the name of Bill who does a fair bit based around that title. He basically says stupid people should wear a sign identifying them as such, that way you could avoid them.
He offers such examples as
"I was stood there in the yard, all our stuff packed in boxes, a U-Haul truck outside and my neighbour comes out and says "Y'all movin?", I replied "Nah we just put all our stuff in boxes every now and then to see how many it takes, here's your sign"
"I got my parent satellite TV, putting the dish up in the yard and someone wanders over and asks "Y'all trying to get extra tv channels?", I responded, "Nope, its just a giant birdbath, here's your sign"
"I flew into Atlanta last week but the airline lost my bags. I went over to the lost luggage desk and the girl there asks me "Has your flight landed yet?" I couldn't give her a sign, they were all in my hold baggage."
I personally think IC users should all have a sign, and a quick rundown of their posting history, that way I would know if I wanted to avoid them or not.
twice is too much. Thats how often people have hinted in recent weeks that I am a purveyor of untruths. I find that more than a little frustrating as I pride myself on being honest, sometimes brutally so, sometimes in a more roundabout fashion. I would never tell a new mother her baby was ugly (brutal honesty, they all are), but I would however tell her it looked just as good as any other I have seen (diplomatic honesty).
I wonder just what it is about some folks, that when they see a truth they dont like, or dont want to believe, they must categorise it as un-true. That surely is the greatest possible lie, to oneself. I have never claimed to be anything other than I am, a grouchy, cynical, sceptical asshole who likes prodding to see what can be stirred up.
So thats the edited highlights of those unpublished blogs. Why now? What do they mean?
They mean I am finally sick of IC and a lot of its inhabitants. Changes are afoot here and IC does not fit in with those changes, I have things I would much rather do than keep banging my head against that virtual wall.
I will continue to post elsewhere, likely increase the frequency too, but under different names, K_F_M was only ever temporary, and was never changed because it would screw up posts from the past.
To all those who are actually interested (if there are any at all) I am happy to tell you where to look, even exchange direct contact details. If I decline to share such things with you then feel free to be offended, it would be intentional if I could be bothered to care.
I shall continue to log on for a little while, but shall not post. Then after one week I shall log on only for the Ipswich Munch, or sporadically.
I wish I could say it has been fun. Feel free to call this a flounce, I think of it more as a parting shot and if I dont know you I likely dont care what you think.
