I don't have an overdraft. I don't need one - usually. Normally I'm quite careful about checking the week before to make sure I have sufficient funds in my account/on my credit card. Well, oops, I didn't check paypal clearly enough when I made my payment and accidentally put it on the account that didn't have enough money.
So I called the phone number on the collections letter that was sent to me, and she said they didn't pay it, and said they could refund the fee because I asked.
So then I went into paypal and was confused. It said that the transfer from the account with insufficient funds failed (no shock there), but the payment had gone through to my payee. How's that work? So, I did an instant transfer in my bank account to get the relevant account up to amount, and then transferred money to my palpay account.
Has this been taken care of? I'm deeply confused. Admittedly, part of it is because my payee is my student loan company in the US, so I see all the currency changes in paypal as well as the transfers. Quick! Validate my actions! Please tell me I'm not screwed. Will this affect my credit rating?!? Arg!
The moral of the story is check which account the money is being withdrawn from VERY carefully.

Paypal will send in effect a direct debit to your bank account, so it doesn't always need the funds there to process a payment, especially if you have a card linked to it as well as a bank account. I've messed up this way before. The payment gets made, but the Paypal account goes to a negative balance. It's complicated and confusing, but the payment has been made.
