Well someone asked for it, so here is Poppy's account of the day, also published in TLI Magazine.

GO FOR IT POPPY,SHE SAID!
When Irene asked me if I would like to accompany her, when she went to have a free make over and a photoshoot, I at first declined. But, after further consideration we thought the outing would been a worthwhile experience. The studio had asked her who would like to join her so when Irene said she had no partner but had an aged parent, they said bring her along and the appointment was made for 11.00 am at the studio in Gray's Inn road, near King's Cross, in London, which meant an early start from Canvey Island. Friends at Chelmsford are probably not aware that I am unable to walk very far, and then only slowly, and have to use a wheel chair. After a train journey to London in the rush hour and a taxi across to King's Cross, imagine the entrance we made into the very posh studio! One large TS pushing a wheel chair containing one small, elderly, lady in a large leather bush hat! The young male receptionist welcomed us without batting an eyelid (they are a theatrical studio) but the few other patrons gave us some curious looks. The young man said, “make yourselves comfortable in the armchairs, offered biscuits, bucks fizz, tea or coffee and to wait for the boss to come to attend to us”. He handed out forms to fill in to indicate to kind of photograph we had in mind. I asked for a Christmas Party make-up suitable for an elderly lady. When the young American lady in charge came, she sat with us to explain the procedure and stayed quite a long time talking about the TV scene. Eventually we were called into the make-up area, which was in the full view of the other customers. First step, a face moisturising massage that the girls found difficult because of the wigs. After they had tried to pin up the hair I volunteered to remove the wig and she was able to continue the massage (which I thoroughly enjoyed as it has been quite a few years since I have had my face stroked!!) I do not have to tell you readers the “ins and outs” of make-up, sufficient to say that for photographic purposes it goes on thick with great emphasis on the eyes. When I got my glasses back, looked in the mirror and at Irene next to me, the first impression was of a couple of bald headed clowns! Next, we descended into the photographic studio in the basement and met the charming young polish photographer. He inquired if we had any ideas for poses. I knew Irene had but explained I just wanted good pictures of an elderly lady ready for a party. The studio had told us to bring at least three sets of clothes. I had the blue frock that I would be wearing at the party that evening, a green sequined blouse and plain skirt and a black evening pants suit. My session took about half an hour but Irene's took a lot longer. It is surprising how tiring modelling can be, sitting standing and holding poses. Many shots were taken on a large digital camera. Back upstairs in our street clothes, while we waited for the proofs to be shown on the computer, we found ourselves under the scrutiny of a later set of waiting clients. The sales manager showed us all the many shots and discarded the ones we did not like. Some we asked to be “tweaked” and possibly air brushed. The sales lady said our attitude throughout the session had made their day We left at 4.30 and got home by 6.30 in time to get ready for the Christmas Party at Chelmsford An exhausting day for we but I would not have missed for the world and we spent some of Irene's inheritance!!
