How Scotland got fucked (4)

Have to say I'm amazed that the BBC ever made this documentary, although it did have to get make for a tiny new Gaelic BBC channel. Given that at heart the BBC is still the state broadcasting network there's no way in hell they'd ever make this documentary in English, let alone show it in England.

Anywho the long and the short of it is that it's an investigation into the policies detailed in recently released papers of the British governments attempts, successful one might say, to sabotage any and all attempts at Scottish independence. The means involved in this range from the slightly duplicitous to the downright dodgy. Basically it was realised that if Scotland cut the English loose, with their oil wealth, Scotland would be one of the richest nations in Europe, and there was a bi-partisan effort by Labour and the Tories to stop that from happening.

It's not really an issue that phases me too much, but I thought given how obscure yet interesting this documentary is I'd reference it up here so interested parties could take a gander. I also think when the BBC actually does the right thing, even if it is the result of elements within the BBC going rogue so to speak, it is to be lauded.

Enjoy, and don't let the subtitles put you off. Or enjoy anyway if you speak Gaelic. Who am I kidding, you don't speak Gaelic.

Fabulous!! Thank you so much for posting this link!! It can only serve to remind us that issues, of nationalism aside, the government of Britain has never been, and is not yet a democracy.

Our views are ignored, our wishes stamped upon and only the party line and the so-called moral majority, listened to.

I wish my mother had a computer and I'd show her this program (she's been under the misapprehension for years that an independent Scotland has not been feasible since 1707).

"A life without pain has no meaning" Athrur Schopenhauer
"Rope, rope, rope, rope, rope..." It's sort of like the Dwarvish song "Gold", only it's about rope.

Wow she must be getting on a bit then :P

I'm sort of in two minds over the actual policy of fucking over Scottish independence itself. I mean if you're the British government, then surely it's sort of in your job description to maximise available resources, and of course ensure the survival of your nation. Scotland leaves the Union then Britain is over, so on a pure survival level a lot of politicos don't want that to happen.

Though that said it certainly paints a grim view of unionist politics, both north and south of the border. It also shows in no uncertain terms both that the government is capable of the sort of forward thinking and deviousness required to systematically fuck with a lot of people, and that they are more than happy to do so.

Supposedly less than a hundred thousand in Scotland. This program is the first time I've heard Gaelic and I'm just glad it's less phlegmy than Welsh. :)
