"A disabled BBC presenter has become the victim of a campaign after parents suggested that she may scare children."

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a147553/disabled-...

For anyone without toddlers, Cerrie is a new on CBeebies, the BBC's channel for young children - she's gorgeous and she's a brilliant presenter.

One of the crucial ways disabled people are changing the world, is simply by being seen in public roles and being ourselves.

The BBC in recent years has made a point of employing disabled people and in particular it is important that we have disabled people on kids TV.

This is one of the ways we grow a society which is not afraid of disabled people because they are kept out of sight. We change the minds of our youth by just presenting a true picture of society and who is in it.

Firstly, let's show Cerrie that those who support her outnumber those who have a personal problem with prejudice.

Secondly, let's show the BBC that although a few people have complained, that we think Cerrie is a brilliant presenter and those of us who support her presence on kids TV outnumber those who would rather disabled people were hidden away in dark places.

Let's show the BBC that they get it right by being an equal opportunities employer.

Cerrie is helping show our youngsters that we live in a beautiful and diverse world and that it is great!

Please contact the BBC here and show your support, share your messages to help give other people's ideas: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/contact/tv.shtml

or try here and click contact the TV team http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/contact/faq.shtml INVITE YOUR FRIENDS, lets make news of our show of support for the BBC and it's employment policy!

Is this an issue? A handful of ignorant comments on a web board serve only to underscore the BBC's policy on the matter. There is no way this is going to adversely affect the BBC's stance on the representation of disability. What it will do is just bring it to a few more people's attention.

It's a bit of a "no publicity is bad publicity" thing, thank goodness, this time it will work for good (good of course being as I define good ;-) )

Currently discussing this on bbc radio 2 Jeremy Vine.

I will ask my youngest if he has seen her. It will be interesting to see if he noticed her hand, I suspect he won't have.

It should be noted that, although the Colonel jests of the armed forces (and more besides), he wholeheartedly supports our troops. This support does not necessarily extend to those who send them inappropriately into harm's way.

My son in law said

- she's hot and blokes will watch her anything that encourages dads to watch tv with their kids is a good. Given his enthusiasm for the woman (Kaddie iirc) who does the weather for Kent, and grandchildren I have will turn out to be meteorologists

having said that joined, invites sent to whole address book and retweeted.

Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, "Where have I gone wrong?"/ Then a voice says to me, "This is going to take more than one night.""

Simply, from an activist point of view it's an opportunity to celebrate the BBC's equal opps policy and show how we disabled people still get shat on by some. Possibly an easy piece of positive news if it is noticeable enough for them to report. Easy for us to add support, and easy for them to report. In principle, there's a lot of reporting of the prejudice, because it's newsworthy, the idea is to compete and give them something more newsworthy with which they can also vaunt themselves. No major campaign needed, but nice to be able to say - we've had hundreds of messages of support. it's only a two minute job.

It might want to send any comments or votes under a non BDSM related identity.

mm I've been wondering whether I should start a disability blog so I can use outside links for twitter. posted this here cos it's the only public blog i've got. maybe I should do that. but it's getting tricky maintaining about six profiles already

I despair of humanity sometimes I really do. What are we supposed to do, hide the different somewhere away from the delicate sensibilities of middle england and their precious children? God forbid they should ever encounter something approaching reality, even through the sanitised and saccharine medium of Cebeebies. Ffs.

One of God's own prototypes, a high powered mutant of some kind, never considered for mass production. Too weird to live, too rare to die.

I have asked another disability blogger to consider letting me guest post so I can remove this from here and use their link instead.. except for the point of view that oppressed people often ally with each other.

Me too :(. Normally I think people are a lot smarter than politicians and others in authority are willing to assume. Most of the people I know are smarter than me, for a start :). But things like this remind me that there are some real morons out there. Anyway, I'm sure Ms Burnell would be grateful for any messages of support.

What's the point having cake, if you can't eat it?
