CAAN (Consenting Adult Action Network) are sorry to hear of the imminent departure of Martin Salter, MP for Reading West – as this means that his constituents will now never get the chance to interrogate some of his wilder fantasies about the nature of the trade in pornography.
Over the last few years, Martin Salter has done nothing to disown claims repeated time and again on his behalf about the existence of a trade in “snuff” – films in which individuals are killed on camera for the sexual arousal of their audience.
The international consensus is that no such trade exists, and a series of investigations by the Police and intelligence services on three continents have reached the same conclusion.
Over the same period, CAAN has challenged Mr Salter repeatedly, both as an organisation and through our individual members, to debate this issue. Most recently, he turned down an invitation to discuss this issue with us on Radio Five Live.
We have pointed out to him that if he has any evidence of such a trade existing he would be in an almost unique position. We have further urged him to take any such evidence to the police both for the sake of alleged victims and for his own safety.
As often as we have asked Mr Salter to come clean on this issue, he has refused to do so, preferring to make his claims behind the cloak of parliamentary privilege.
In the light of his comments, CAAN was actively considering putting forward a candidate at the next General Election to place these arguments before the electorate and to ask voters to make up their own minds about Mr Salter.
Sadly, that option is now no longer available.
However, our invitation to Mr Salter to debate with us remains open.
