No, not me silly ![]()
Manchester United Football Club. This signifies a further 117 million lost in 2 or 3 years since the Florida reclusive Michael Glaser bought the club and then secured his whole debt against it.
This however isnt a blog to beat Man Utd with, its more a case to signify where the game of football is going.
Currently since Roman Abramovitch bought Chelsea, there has been an influx of wealthy individuals whether they been American (Liverpool, Man Utd and Aston Villa) Russian (Chelsea and Portsmouth) and from the Arab States (manchester City)....
This wont continue for a number of reasons, the first one being a prestige issue.
Michel Platini, the figurehead of the European Governing body UEFA is determined to push through legislation forcing clubs to forfeit European Champions League places if they dont make profit. For any club currently this would be financially crippling....Take the German Bundesliga for example, the clubs in this would be expelled if they made a loss...
Would this make a far level playing field? Well, yes in short but only for a short time.............and the reason? In 5 or 10 years, clubs (certainly in England anyway) would be looking for "True" Corporations to take ownership im talking the likes of Disney,UPS,Microsoft etc why? To add sheen and prestige, not to mention diversity to their business. TV companies would love this but currently for reasons of competition wouldnt be allowed.
Ill come back to manchester Untd briefly, why would the Glaser family buy such a toy as a football club....Aside from reasons mentioned they do appear to be really motivated by the profit the sale could bring.
Chelsea have a different issue, the debt they have is responsible to one man, Abramovitch. If any legislation came in, he could, if necessary just pay it off, small change to him maybe ....but just how badly as the credit crunch hit his purse?
10 years time who knows where we will be? Disney United? Microsoft Chelsea or Aston Ups? Who knows, but lets face it, 50 years ago no one wouldve predicted a player being nearly sold for 120 million (kaka to Man city).
It'll be a bumpy ride.

I don't think The Villa are in the same situation as liverfool or manure , there owner has invested wisely, listened to people who knew what they are doing. The Glasers, Romanaovich and hicks and gillete steamed into owning the clubs,Learner has trod carefully and its worked then again we are owned by a Icelandic bankrupt, so new balls please! Platini irritates me and i am not sure his plans would be legal under EU law. There is also a certain amount of English bashing here. Years ago when the top European sides had all the money and were buying up all the talent, including a world record fee for Zidane and winning the trophies, not a peep was heard. With the influx of the tv money and the forming of the Premier league suddenly all the top players were coming to England and English clubs were winning all the trophies. Now this is suddenly immoral! The Champions league was built on greed anyway. It was created to stop the top European clubs breaking away from their domestic leagues and forming their own league. The clubs in it were the richest clubs and suddenly thanks to the CL money they got richer and richer and so bought all the top players. For the clubs on the outside it was almost impossible to break through and as Man City are finding now, even having a sudden influx of money isn't swaying the players from wanting to join the established top four.A real catch 22 situation. You can't break in without buying or producing better players,no matter how much money you have got. For years clubs not in the top four have been crying out for a more level playing field only to be brushed contemptuously aside by the big boys.Indeed Peter Kenyon of Chelsea told them to stop carping and it was their job to catch teams like Chelsea up,knowing unless a rich owner came in it was never going to happen. When the Arabs outbid them for Robinho they suddenly cried foul! We will see where it will all end and a more level playing field would be good for all if it happens. The flaw in Platini's plan is if a few top clubs are kicked out of the Champions League then it will become devalued and the tv money will go and games will be played in half empty stadiums like our League cup.

Anybody who thinks that you need an immense amount of money to stand among the top four clubs in the country needs to just take a look at Arsenal. Wenger spends less than probably any manager in the top half of the division, and a massive amount less than the most of those. Hell there are teams in the relegation mess that spend more than Arsenal, consistently so, yet the Goons have been consistently right in the hunt for the title for a decade. The fact that people lump Arsenal into the 'Big Four' given the pathetic wage and transfer budget they operate on is a credit to how they run things. As for breaking into that big four, well Villa are going in, Chelsea are dropping out, and City are nowhere near it. So what's the deal? Arsenal and Villa are teams run on very tight purse strings, Chelsea and Manchester City are two of the richest clubs on the planet. So the notion that money equals success is frankly rot. Personally I love to hear European football bitches cry as the English clubs trample all over them like the all-star conquering heroes they are. Our national side might be about as hard-nosed and motivated as a jelly baby but everybody in the world knows that football is played the best in England. The Premiership is the best league in the world by a country mile and it makes those European fuckers weep, because they know it's true. There is not one single club on the continent that could win the Premiership. And people know it. The last United versus Chelsea game had a bigger global audience than the Superbowl, and it was just a league match. English football might not be owned by English chairmen, or played by English players, but I still think that the fact the football played in England is the envy of the world is a great thing. I would like to see evidence of that. I hope you aren't taking the figures Sky, like all broadcasters, give to boost the number of people who will be watching a programme by quoting the figure of TV sets capable of receiving the programme. BARB and its worldwide equivalents quote the numbers who really watched the programme. The last Man Utd v Chelsea game, on Jan the 11th, had an audience in the UK of no more than 2,224,000 people, or 4.3% of the UK population aged 4+. That is the daily reach for Sky Sports 1, the numbers watching the match would have been less than that. The US audience for the Superbowl was 84.27 million. The big difference between the Superbowl and The Premier League is the Superbowl is available on free to air TV, the Premier League is on pay to view TV. Platini's suggestion is borne of anglophobia and doesn't create a level playing field. The team that wins the league makes the most money from champions league, thus have the most money to improve the squad, pull further away from the rest, win again, make the champions league money repeat. This is why Lyon have won the french title seven times on the bounce. I don't think he'll be able to get it passed though, as I'm sure they could have UEFA under anti competitive legislation.

I wasn't talking about the UK numbers. Overseas, oddly enough considering what it costs us, the premiership is very often free to air (clever use of intertubes can usually hook you up live with any match you want to watch for this reason). Places like China often contribute tens of millions of viewers. Anybody who says truth is stranger than fiction has never seen tentacle porn.

No doubt you have the audience ratings figures to prove it. If only 4.3% of the UK public watches the matches I can't see any higher percentages watching it any where else. When Premiership games are shown in the UK, it is 8 hours later in China, so the 3 o'clock match starts at 11pm China time, not traditionally an hour when you get peak audiences.
