I just finished reading the first part of The Slave Breaker Series by Maculategiraffe and... guh!!! It was ridiculously hot!!! Like... burn-the-eyeballs-out-of-your-head hot. It has pretty much everything in it I would want from a fic that's going to call itself "The Slave Breakers". Here... this is from the author's own warnings:
| This is slave fic, with all that implies (dubious consent, bondage, violence, etc.), and absolutely crawling with graphic slash (boy-on-boy), as well as some graphic het and femslash, threesomes, foursomes, and all manner of debauchery |
The main character, Bran, is so gorgeous in his reluctance and fear at first, and then even more gorgeous in his loving, adoring submission. It just... SDGUCNBFTDBYCBEVEYDJGFG!!! I was gripped... and not only because of the kink (which was actually not too graphic at all) but because of the blossoming and growing relationship between Bran and his new master, Holden. The story is really about Bran learning to trust again, after having been badly treated by past masters, and how Holden "retrains" him and teaches him that his submission is a beautiful thing and not something to fight against. Bran, of course, ends up falling for Holden and there are all sorts of complications that arise from this. I wont spoil you, but I thought it was really nicely done.
The thing is... it's an incredibly romantic, idealised view of the master/slave, D/s dynamic, which is something I've become quite cynical about over the last couple of years - mostly due to a lot of the comments I read from people on various forums. I tend to get annoyed by fantasists who confuse their very idealised view of slavery with reality, but for some reason, this fic, as Romantic as it is, really made me *want*... I've seen others say that, too. Maybe it's just that it appeals to that part in us that doesn't really care about the reality all that much, because the fantasy is so much more satisfying? That makes sense, I guess. But anyway, I enjoyed it... rather a lot.
I was trying to figure out while reading, though... is the author Domme or sub? My guess is going on sub, mostly because of the way Holden lavishes Bran with such attention and affection. It seems like the projection of a need or desire which I think is very common among most subs. I also think this is why it appealed to me the way it did.
So, yes. This seires comes very highly reccomended. The index page for the entire series can be found here.
Enjoy.
