Yes it was a corruption of this to nigger and negro originally. Spanish slave traders used Negro as it also means black in spanish but most of the slaves came to the USA via french traders and to a lesser exstent british where the river/ niger meaning was corrupted to nigger by the southern amercan accent after the slaves had been labled Nigers by the blacks who enslaved them and sold them to european traders originally. Both Negro and nigger are slave terms, similarly so is Caucasion as the white slaves trafficked in the ottoman empire tended to come from the Caucases.
