The infamous law comes in, and the BBC shows snuff (25)

Well, it wasn't a *real* snuff movie, obviously. But it was real in the context of the programme, I should say.

If you've not been watching, BBC3's been showing a new comedy/drama series called "Being Human", about a vampire and a werewolf sharing a haunted house in south Bristol. Being that sort of show, there's lots of blood and violence, as you might expect. Episode two was last night, and it featured a snuff movie, posted through the main characters' letterbox.

It featured: a grainy home-video of a man getting naked, having sex, and then being killed, bloodily. He was the only person in the shot, because the vampire he was fucking was invisible to the camera (of course); but, nevertheless, you distinctly saw his arse humping up and down, followed by his death, and a big pool of blood on the floor.

Given that this was on the BBC, it will (almost certainly) in due time receive a BBFC certificate for release-to-DVD. But, I thought, maybe we should make a note of it. Apart from the obvious "fantasy" content (although to be honest I could believe there are vampires living in Totterdown), there's nothing to distinguish it from, well, any old depiction of someone who's just been killed during sex.

I really don't think the beeb are going to be worried about the viewing of a "snuff film" in a fictional series.

As an aside, 'Being Human' is absolutely fucking brilliant!

Why not? If someone took a copy of Being Human and edited out that sequence, so it wasn't obvious where it was from, why wouldn't it fall under the new law?

Last night's episode wasn't as good as the first. I mostly watch it for the locations - I regularly walk past the place where Lauren killed in last night's show, for example.

Because the law has been drafted to exclude such actions, as mentioned only five hundred times or so on here in the last year and a bit.

Science, the only religion that works even if you don't believe in it.

Not so. If someone extracted that scene from the programme, and it was believed they had done that because it turned them on, they would still be liable to be prosecuted for it. I'm surprised you didn't notice that, given the five hundred times it's been discussed - see what the reliable Mr Ozimek's articles, for example.

Ah, but Forestpines, this is the BBC not the internet, which is what the new law is about :)

HOWEVER, as I missed last nights episode, and WAS thinking of watching it on catchup TV on the net, would this now turn the tables and make it illegal.

In my opinion, this is now one episode i shall miss as the law is so twisted, and so difficult to interperate, that, rather than have to ponder over whether i have made a mistake in watching on the net, i shall miss it altogether and go and dream about wedding dresses instead

You'll be fine if you watch the whole episode, though.

Does this mean that we finally have grounds to have Nicholas Cage (8mm) incarcerated for at least 3 years? :-)

I was somewhat gutted to find that the remake of 'Wicker Man' wasn't just a ruse to set light to the prat!

Loved 'Being Human' when it was just an a single playlet in a series of experimental shorts; very pleased it's now a full series. It has the potential to become a cult series - sort of a Buffy from the other side of the fence.

Yeah.. sounds like some clips of this show could fall foul of the CJIA.

Actually your fine if you just watch a bit - so long as you don't create a separate new work in the process.

No one can put you in jail for using the pause or fast forward button, watching it backwards, or for using a magnifying glass or any other way of viewing a legal image/movie. Recording just one portion of it on your TIVO could be illegal though ;-)

And all men kill the thing they love, By all let this be heard, Some do it with a bitter look, Some with a flattering word, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword!
