Will any of you be able to get a proper job though?

What is a 'proper' job?
|
One where you pay more in taxes than you receive in handouts?

That is extremely debatable. The person on here doing a PhD in political economy ought to be able to tell you that accountancy is a poor substitute for understanding wealth creation in the economy as a whole. Mind you someone should have told the bankers that
|
Possibly debatable, but it seems a reasonable definition until something better comes along.
Until the PhD in Political Economy is put to productive use the accountant is contributing more to society. Even then, a PhD in Political Economy could be largely wishful thinking rather than something which makes a positive contribution to the economy, while the accountant provides a quantifiable service. (In fact cab drivers perform better than economists at forecasting the economy, and they do so as a sideline while providing a service and paying taxes)
Empirically, a PhD in Political Economy is actually detrimental to society. According to research by MITI, if you want a strong economy train more engineers, if you want a weak economy train more economists.

I have a History undergraduate degree, currently doing a Masters (MLitt) in Medieval Studies. planning to get a PhD and become a Lecturer (hopefully)
EDIT: apologies, I've bumped a fairly old topic! A good sub knows her limits; a good Dom respects them.
