These are the prepared words of a man who knew he was going to be murdered for his committment to the cause of freedom. We who are squandering generations of similar sacrifice by our forbearers should read his final editorial and remember a brave and honest advocate of freedom.

I'm very glad I just noticed this thread. Although it's a few days old, it needs to be more widely read. That article throws our own lives into perspective. Whatever freedoms we are left with in this country were hard won, by the sacrifices of those with great courage, although I can't imagine anyone with the kind of courage shown by this man. I certainly doubt many British journalists would risk so much as a fingernail to espouse an unpopular cause. The story also has a particular resonance for me, as my biological father came from Sri Lanka, although I was fortunate enough to be born in England. We easily forget how very different life is in most other places on this planet, as almost none of it is reported in our own media, which instead feeds us a diet of celebrity culture and the parochial squabbling known as 'party politics'. It takes an effort to see beyond this smokescreen. Thanks Andromalius. What's the point having cake, if you can't eat it? |

Tragically, this confirms Machiavelli's contention (I may not be reproducing this accurately) that: Amongst so many who aren't, the virtuous man must surely come to grief. If there was one man such as him in this country then I would feel hope. Edited 12 Oct 09, 6:07 PM by Ima_Kant |
