I was enjoying my Sunday morning ritual of reading the British Journal of Photography this morning, when I was struck by the sad news that Bettie Page died on Thursday last week. It was printed in a tiny foot note in the other-news column and I was shocked when I read it. I haven't thought about Bettie for years and years, but when I was first discovering S&M she was a big influence on me. Back before the days of the internet, the thousands of kinky pictures which she appeared in were the best printed S&M imagery around (for me, anyway) and I spent many a long hour in her company. Later in my life she became the acceptable coffee-table-book face by which I introduced my friends to BDSM, as a precursor to coming out to them.
I owe Betty a debt of thanks for being who she was and I am deeply saddened by her death.

A lady on the London tube asked me about the lady on my Bettie Page bag, I explained that she was the original Dita von Teese and made striptease an art, she smiled and thanked me ~ it made my day. Bless Bettie Page, may she rest in peace Though the sex to which I belong is considered weak you will nevertheless find me a rock that bends to no wind ~ Elizabeth I |
