The flight of the bird cage. (9)

KorriLee's profile

Posted by KorriLee on Sun 21 Dec 08, 12:47 PM to KorriLee's blog.

The howling winds screamed destruction, dark bitter skies roared across the creaking roofs of my tiny home...the shed swore as the steel plates lifted and fought against the heavy duty roofing nails that dug deep into old beams..

The dogs both in my bedroom quivered in terror while sheets of unused roofing hurled along the back paddock and rose with the wind beneath its wings and landed 4 fields down the drom...I shall have to beg for their return after Christmas...

The darkness deepened , no power, no heat, noise intensified in the early hours as winds grew stronger , cats huddled on my bed along with one of the dogs his elderly nose almost in my, ear breath coming in short sharp gasps...the lab whimpering as she crouched as close to the bed as she could.

Clutching my backup lighting pack I came down thro' the house into the kitchen...3am..doric gone out, shivering like a terrified animal at bay briefly the power came back on then not moments later gone again, leaving me stood in ever deeping shadow

Then the night exploded...I lifted the light and shone it thro' the side kitchen window just as the outside bird flight lifted from its base..and began a dance down the yard towards my car... It twirled and pirouetted , twisting and turning like a drunk on Newyears eve... side steeping this way and that..leaning at unbelieveable angles...then righting itself, hitting the floor with a resounding twack...the framework buckling, bending bits dropping, making its progess.

I dived in coat and wellies worried for my car and incase the thing went on to the road in the dark...threw open the front door..and tried to get into the yard...I couldn't move..it was impossible to put one foot infront of the other even in the shelter of the house..winds whistling down the tunnel formed by house wall and hedges .. dogs wouldn't move.....

It took all my strenth to get back inside and I could do nothing but watch as the dance of destruction was played out before my eyes..

I went back to my bed, not wanting to see or hear the final moment when cage hit car...eventually falling asleep about 5am..

I was out as soon as it was light enough and the wind managable..to find said bird cage laid in its death throes across the yard path..just one foot from the rear of my car.. Too heavy for me to shift alone I sent for reinforcements..and together we rolled it onto the side walled plot, where its rocking and rolling as the winds still blow now..

The evilness that is Islands Gales is still sneaking out there...making mucking out impossible as I can't push the barrow against this wind...and its blowing from the barrow onto the paths as soon as I leave the shed...so this must wait... I am just thankfull that all survived 'cept one small cock..

To those out there I know and love, and to all in sickness and in health..May there be a Blessing on your Ways this Day...and thro' the next week.. Rememeber Me..
