I am a sculptor, working in metal and ceramics, who has recently finished a Fine Art Degree at Derby and in the early part of 2009 I will be opening an Art Gallery in the City of Derby. check www.quorum.cz
Within the Gallery I will be renting out wall spaces to a wide range of artist's working in as diverse a range of media as possible, from textiles, glass, ceramics, paintings, metals and jewellery.
The spaces, approximately 6-foot wide by 8-foot high, can be rented out, for sales or for purely exhibition purposes, for a minimum time of two weeks. Within this time the artist can display as much, or little, work as they like and swap, change and add to their pieces as they see fit. There will also be floor-standing space available for sculptures and cabinet displays of smaller pieces.
Spaces will cost an average of £25 a week with 10% commission on sales (with a maximum commission to be set nearer the opening) but if you prepay for two months you will get three weeks commission free. There will also be two exhibition areas available for art groups or organisations to exhibit their work throughout the year.
Finally, there are four studio spaces available, approximately 100 to 110sq ft, which will be for rent for periods of six
Please send CV with images of your work to sacralud@hotmail.com with your requirements or you can call for further details on 07941 779973.
part two:
I know a number of galleries sell work on a commission basis only but after talking to a few artists I would just like to make this point.
I make ceramics and think they should sell for between £60 and £120, as I feel this is what they are worth and, at the same time, are prices a customer would pay.
In many galleries commission is between 35% and 100% so my £120 ceramic will be selling for between £162 and £240 and this, I think, is likely to prohibit many from buying my work.
If I let the gallery sell the work for £120 then I will only get between £60 and £85 for my piece which, I think, undervalues my work.
In quorum gallery if you think the piece should sell for £120 it will be sold for £120 and you would get £108 for it (£120 – 10%), with a weekly rental of £25 so you would receive £83 (see comparisons in the charts below on two art sales.)

Remember, in chart two the artist wants £90 for his work but it will have to sell for up to £180 in a commission gallery and at this price it may not sell at all.
Remember also you can have many pieces shown in your space and so the amount you will receive from quorum will be much greater than from the others galleries.
In the charts I give two examples: you can see that an artist sells 2 pieces of art he believes are worth £90 and £75.
In the first chart these items sell at what he wants for them, in the second the pieces are sold at what he wants for them PLUS the gallery's commission.
I think a rental space of £25 a week is a fair and affordable amount and is less than many art events charge (and you do not have to be with your art for it to sell) as it will be available to the public 7 days a week and looked after by quorum staff.
Furthermore, if you have work that is not readily sellable, at £25 a week you can afford to bring it to the public's notice which would not be possible in a commission only gallery as they would only exhibit work that can be sold to earn then their percentage.
We will be having demonstrations, workshops and third-party events in the gallery and this will bring in new visitors each week and new chances for work to be sold.
We will be happy for you to give talks about your work, give practical demonstrations and bring to quorum any benefits you wish that will help you and the gallery together.
We can have invitation preview nights if you wish to publicise your work being exhibited or you can simply come along and display you work in your space for the time you wish it to be there.
So, thanks for reading and if you are interested in any aspects of the gallery, exhibiting, selling, demonstrations, workshops or studios, please get in contact sooner rather than later, as if there is little interest I will be forced to cancel the gallery opening.
