Yes, it is a film I like very much, and Peter Sellers is excellent in it. I watched the original version, which ended with the credits over a TV screen which was showing the static you get when there is no signal. It fitted perfectly, and was a great way to finish the film. Then I bought the video, and discovered that the credit sequence had been replaced by outtakes of Sellers fluffing his lines. I couldn't believe it - the whole atmosphere of the end had been ruined. It brings your emotions down with a very unpleasant bump. For many years I hated Sellers because of it. But then I read an article about the film, and found that the credit sequence had been inserted by the director despite Sellers' strenuous objections. Unfortunately my DVD has the same credit sequence, so it's probably advisable to turn off the DVD at the end of the final sequence by the lake. |
