an internet geek and addict I admit it, 
I hate not being able to get online at home to chat with friends etc. So i am considering buying one of these top up usb dongle thingys the mobile companies provide.
Does anyone have any experience of these and able to offer me any advice please?
Probably getting a laptop with wireless capability soon as well so will be able to piggyback onto free wifi in pubs and maybe someone near my flat may have open connection. Tee hee

~ETA~ I am currently accessing IC via Opera Mini on my mobile phone so can write memo's, blogs and the like but not able to chat. Boo hoo

My D bought one and loves it, he is online all over the place all the time. I now get answers to emails when I think I am safe from his notice. lol |

My mum got one of those 3G adapters and it's pretty damn good and fast. Only problem she had was that the guy in the shop told her there would be somewhere on the program that came with it to enter the code for topping it up. What she actually had to do was go to the companies website and put the code in there. However as there didn't seem to be a need to put in the code she just used it and got about an hour or so out of it and then couldn't get back on the next day. And so I had to sort it out for her as she couldn't then get back on-line to top up her account. So just make sure there is somewhere you can go to get on-line to top up your account if you run out without realising. Oh and best thing to do would be to find out what local aerials you have and get one from one of the closest so you have a good signal. My mum is using a 3 one and my work has been doing something using the 3 3G adapters and they seem to be pretty good, but like I say you want something that will give you decent coverage at home. i also use the "3" mobile broadband usb modem on pay as you go, i got it earlier this year and have had no problems with it whatsoever, but topping it up can be a pain in the ass sometimes!! however its never let me down and is fast enough to use Iplayer etc. 10 quid gets you 1GB of download valid for 30 days and 15 quuid gets you 3GB of downloading for 30 days. Its been a godsend for me as i work away from home loads. if you have anymore questions let me know and i will help if i can..

I'm on 3 as well. The claimed connection speeds are much faster than any of the others. It's ok. Not as good as Virgin broadband for speed, but I've found it extremely useful wherever I go. (I'm on contract so can't comment on top up issues). Sometimes it grinds to a halt, but for general things it's ok. I wouldn't recommend it if you like to download large files, but for sites like IC, BBC etc it's fine. But to give you an example, when it's poor I can't listen to a BBC radio programme as the streaming doesn't have enough connectivity. You have to consider what you will use it for, whether mobility is important for you and how much it costs. If you want to download a lot of stuff, and don't need mobility, I'd certainly say to stick with a landline connection. A dirty mind is a joy for life. |
