Er... in vanilla (esp professional) situations, your petticoat is meant to be underwear! So people aren't supposed to see the lace peeking out from under your skirt! It's like having visible bra straps. Not appropriate, ladies!

I have a copy of an original 19th century Petticoat/crinolene pattern.. which I haven't had made yet.. that's as near as I get to a petticoat/slip.

I have always worn slips or petticoats - the fact that I am over 30 may have a bearing of course..... and the fact that I always wear dresses (I think I may have one pair of trousers somewhere at the back of the wardrobe).

I do remember going into a major department store a few years ago to find a pretty half slip. To my amazement, amongst the hundreds of bras, knickers, chemises etc. they had none! The assistant told me that they weren't in demand any more
