I went to see Mozarts The Magic Flute on Friday night. Was performed by Glyndebourne on tour and absolutely fantastic, wonderful singing, lovely production and great costumes including some awesome corsets.
The thing is I'm not sure whether it's because I've been hanging out on IC too much recently but I noticed quite a few BDSM-y things going on.
First a chap is gagged with a big collar and padlock thingy, then the heroine is tied up by a nasty chap with a whip (who incidentally was rubbish at using it!) all the while one of the 'morals' is that women should stop their chitter chattering and do as their husbands say because husbands know best etc and in pleasing their husbands they will be happy as pigs in mud...oh and did i mention the corsets.
Hmm so maybe not that many BDSM-y things after all. Wonder if I'm being a bit sensitive to it all (like when you run out of petrol and then see petrol stations everywhere) or whether opera was actually a way of making being kinky more acceptable?
And now I'm wondering if there are any other operas with any BDSM themes...and when can I go and see them

great blog! i think most theatrical things have a strong bdsm type flavour look at most character dynamics...there is often a very strong sense of dominance and submission between any two close characters look at the number of plays where some bird gets stripped naked... i could go on but yeah, people in the theatre are as kinky as anything me thinks lol luvvies eh lol!

Well, I'm sure there are some sort of low end operas going on in most peoples bedrooms. With canes, whips, floggers etc, I'm sure the high notes get hit often. Ba-dum-tishh~!

It depends on your mindset at the time. I can find BDSM overtures in many things, depending on my state of mind, but I've also been caught out by my own residual innocence when I'm not thinking. Dommy_nick

Not BDSM themed but Ive used Madame Butterfly as background music for play in the past, absolutely fantastic. I love the chastity now that it flows between us. It is like fresh water and rain. How can men want wearisomely to philander." "I love chastity now, because it is the peace that comes of fucking." DH Lawrence from Lady Chatterley's Lover

Yep - Magic Flute is a great opera! (The music's good too.... my fave opera in fact....) Mozart's operas were written c.200 years ago within a culture where women had very few rights and even less emancipation For the vast majority of middle-class and upper-class women in the 18th century, the only concept of 'career' would be catching the best possible husband Many of Mozart's operas reflect the mores of the society he lived in - eg class, (class)-domination, subjugation of women by both society in general and their husbands/fathers, and the focus of women on securing a husband Cosi fan tutte Cosi fan tutte is my second fave opera (isn't Mozart great) and has recurring themes of male dominance in marriage and female submission Though "Cosė fan tutte" literally translates as "Thus Do They All"..... and the longer title "Cosė fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti" translates as "Thus Do They All, The School For Lovers"...... The actual 'tag line' for the opera is "The Perfidy of Women" - this reflects the story-line that although a wife will be totally constant, loyal and obedient when married, she will be perfidious (use every weapon at her disposal, etc) en route to the best possible marriage Whether or not you pick up on the Ds themes within Cosi.... the music is fantastic!

Yep - Opera North's production of The Magic Flute (artistic director: Tim Supple) has the three sidekicks of the Queen of the Night dressed as Dommes in black riding suits and wielding crops! Lots of old boys in the audience ordering tickets for the next days performance.... |
