I was turned down for a job today, for the following reason, and I quote verbatim from their email (minus a remark in parentheses which doesn't affect the sense):

Company X wrote:
Our impression was that you felt that you could make a noticeable difference that would materially affect the company ... and we think it would be misleading of us to employ someone under this impression.

Well, they should have said from the start if they wanted someone who would just sit quietly in a corner and make no noticeable difference whatsoever. I can do that too (but only when my domme tells me). :)

Anyway, I did actually LOL when I read this.

Er...what exactly did they want then?

I can see them reviewing CV's now...

"Oh look at this one, minimal education, naff all in the way of transferable skills and no ideas. Excellent! Hired!!"

You're better off out of there hon.

One of God's own prototypes, a high powered mutant of some kind, never considered for mass production. Too weird to live, too rare to die.

I've amended that to say what they really meant! :-)

Re-training mid-life, I end up being told I am far too highly qualified for the junior jobs , so they don't think I'd stick around (in other words, you'll show your boss up), and under experienced for the more senior ones. So if you need 3 years experience, how the fuck do you get the first 3 minutes? Grrrr!

(I think what they really mean is yer too old, smell a bit iffy and we want the pretty girl with the fantastic tits!).

Why poison your liver when I could eat it for you?

I was given the impression a while ago that it's a lot easier to lie and bullshit your way into a job way too senior for you, than one they think you're over-qualified for. If you've ever worked for a lot more money, particularly - you haven't a cat in hell's chance. No matter what you tell them about how you hated it, how glad you are to be out, how much you want to be local, how much their job really is exactly what you want etc etc.

Years ago I used to believe that really good people were never turned down for jobs. I soon realised that's rubbish. Which is just as well really, but still worth keeping in mind then you think where you could have ended up, bsb!

It smacks of Orwellian doublespeak, meaning...

"Our impression was that you are an enthusiastic worker, capable of independent thought and action, who would rock the boat in our staid little company. As we are neither forwards looking or pro-active, we feel that you would not fit into our dickensian way of working"

Thanks for the supportive messages; they've certainly brightened my day. I've been away for a couple of days, having some fun, so you needn't feel too sorry for me, though. I'm no stranger to disappointment anyway, having been turned down for numerous jobs in the past: thinking back, though, I'm always relieved that things panned out the way they did. Sometimes, what you think you want is not what you really want, or need.

Employers are mostly idiots anyway! Be your OWN idiot, I say.

Cheers. :)

What's the point having cake, if you can't eat it?

That's for real? They have a policy only to employ people who won't make a noticeable difference and don't intend to? Fuck, what's the salary, I will go for the job and promise not to turn up so I can avoid any danger of making a difference. That's the worst reason for turning anyone down I ever heard.

It's only a weblog :-)
